| | Another nearby oxbow lake formed when the Kansas River changed course is just east of the US 24 and US 75 interchange in north Topeka. It is a bit smaller than Silver Lake, but there is some public access from the roadways to fish the lake. It has been called Menoken Lake or North Topeka Oxbow Lake. It is about five miles east of Silver Lake. Says John Roony
Silver Lake was formed when the Kansas River shifted to the south. The Lake had been part of |
the river. It is also fed by a spring. In the 1980s during several years of drought, the lake all but dried up. Only mud was left for a time. Says John Roony
I have been around Silver Lake for years. In the 1980s the lake all
| but dried up during a very dry spell. It has a spring that feeds it and this helped prevent it from totally drying out. It is one of the few natural lakes in Kansas, being formed when the Kansas River changed course; Silver Lake had been part of the River. People fish this lake and catch at least some fish.
