Camping is a magnificent site for that, and the best way to spend a winter day is on the slopes of nearby Blandford. There is a magnificent hiking trail close to Gardner State Park called the County Road Trail, and getting to Middle Branch Westfield River from Gardner State Park
is trouble-free.
