    Desert Pleasures
Desert Pleasures is devoted to desert wanderings in the Colorado Plateau. It is a site where you can get ideas for your ownland trips and share thoughts about these desert places.

    Hiking in SouthEastern Arizona
Southeastern Arizona contains the southern portion of the Basin and Range, which started extending in an east- west direction and forming our many mountains (ranges) and basins 15 million years ago. It has a range in elevation from approximately 1000 feet to over 10,000 feet and possesses 5 of the 7 major biozones found in the Northern Hemishpere. It is also the location of the Sonoran Desert, one of the greenest deserts in the world.

    Hiking in Arizona
Arizona has 6 different habitat zones, ranging from the Lower Sonoran Zone (from sea level to about 4,500 feet) to the Alpine Zone, found above the 11,500 foot mark in the San Fransisco Peaks north of Flagstaff. Because of this, it is important to be aware of where you plan to hike or backpack and to prepare accordingly.

    Humphreys Peak, Arizona, 12,633 Feet
Humphreys is probably the easiest of the Western highpoints. The National Forest Service says you can hike the 4.5 miles from the Arizona Snow Bowl to the summit in 3 hours (although a more realistic time is 4 to 4.5 hours).

    HUACHUCA HIKING CLUB
The Huachuca Hiking Club (HHC) is an organization composed of people in southeastern Arizona interested in exploring and conserving our natural wilderness heritage through hiking, camping, and volunteer trail maintenance.

    Ballentyne Stole My Heart
I wanted to try something different: making a plan and carrying it out to explore a new place I had never been. I had noticed the Ballentyne Trail in my maps and was excited to try out this 12-mile trail, which extends from near Four Peaks to the Beeline Highway.

    Desert Survival
Some tips on surviving in the desert and some things to do in preparation for your trip.

    Buckskin Gulch Virtual Tour
Along the Utah-Arizona border runs the deepest, darkest slot canyon in the world. Carved by eons of flashfloods, the canyon runs over 10 Km through the red rock Paria Wilderness. Those entering are warned by a park service sign at the head of the canyon to "not expect a rapid reponse if you run into trouble". Indeed, a broken ankle in this part of the country can spell certain doom for the unprepared.

    Arizona Travelogue
This region is home to the legend of the Lost Dutchman. He was rumored to have a secret goldmine in the Superstition Mountains. The Dutchman didn't want anyone to find his prime ore panning loacation, so he only ventured out at night... and one day, he never returned!
