If you are traveling by, why not stop by Lake Winona. Summertime highs at Lake Winona commonly tend to be in the 70's. Once the sun is down it sinks down to the 40's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 20's, and after the sun is down all through the winter temperatures at Lake Winona sink into the-10's. Camping at Boulder Campground is always a tremendous experience; the Boulder Canyon Trail offers hiking at its best. Lake Winona gets very little rain; the month of May is the wettest with most of the rain; the driest month of the year is February. everybody but if it's for you then, we recommend Boulder Creek.
All the outdoors enjoyable stuff in the Wind River Range will keep you coming back time and again. Lake Winona is fine enough to spend more than a day at, Scab Creek
Campground is a fine local campground, and Lake Winona is right by the Lake Ethel Trail. This lake is so wonderful. Lakes? Sure, North Fork Lake is in close proximity, and after a long day outdoors Best Western Pinedale Inn is a nice place to spend a night or two. Yeah, come up here to the Wind River Range for a perfect time.

Hay Pass Trail
 | I backpacked over Hay Pass (from Boulder Lake Trailhead to to Golden Lakes) last July 25. Easy ascent to pass except for stream crossings, trail gets faint for about 1/4 mi.above Dennis Lake (quite a view down to the lake. At the outlet of the unnamed lake (Beth Lake???) below the pass on the west side (at head of North Fk Boulder Cr.) water was high & swift, so I routed eastward around to the head of the lake crossing 2 inlet streams where they braid apart. through thick willows- a slow deal, but better than hip-deep swift water at the outlet. Great cutthroat fishing at Victor Lake (on fish to 19) during a hail storm. Guess the fish thought the hail was a swarm of bugs. Saw nobody else from Victor lk. to Golden Lks and back (3 days). Not the most spectacular scenery in the range (peaks are mostly round-topped, not like the jagged peaks to the north or south), but no people and great fishing (Golden Lakes had lots of 14 goldens but they were not biting- typical of goldens). Going in again this July, only farther this time, north of Golden Lakes. Anybody going that way?... |
Scab Lake Trail
| scab lake trail is not one for the weak, it is a hard climb with outstanding rewards of beauty & huge high powered brilliantly colored brook trout up to 6 lbs that we know of in scab lake! oh almost forgot the last time I went was July 5 it snowed at scab 18 plus inches, I hope that I remembered to tell that the 11 mile trail to the scab lake is a hard hard climb, I have only made it 3 times to the lake thanks Allen Eagle concrete worker & stock car racer Jackson Hole... |

I went up there 15 years ago and just got back from another week this last weekend....the fishing was much, much better in the past. I think the WY Game and Fish spends all their golden trout stocking funds on wolves now. The stocking ended the year the wolves were reintroduced.........Hmmm, isn't that interesting! Also....too many llamas and horses bringing the light-weights up the mountain to clutter the place this time....the trails looked like a lost group of Custard's cavalry must still be riding the trails. :( But the beauty of the area will always remain. Thank you, Lord, for your beautiful handiwork.... |
