Now, you may feel that's heaps but there's even more cool things to do here in the Wind River Range. Summertime brings highs in the 80's to Shoestring Lake. Summer night lows sink down to the 40's. Throughout the wintertime this place gets highs in the 30's, and during the dark hours in the wintertime at Shoestring Lake temperatures plunge to the 10's. This lake is located in the wonderful Wind River Range.

| | is always a tremendous adventure, and if you come at the right time of year, Bull Lake Creek offers some good whitewater. This lake is so wonderful. Near Shoestring Lake you locate the Halls Lake Trail which is a great hiking trail. Lakes are great; Long Lake is a lake that's next to Shoestring Lake. You're most likely keen on lakes, Halls Lake is one of those nearby, and Best Western Pinedale Inn is a pleasant site to get some rest.

there's a heap more entertaining things to do in the Wind River Range. There are magnificent places to explore along the Firehole Trail, and you can stay the night at Boulder Campground. At Shoestring Lake you don’t see much rain;
June is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest month of the year is February. What a site this is for outdoors people. Shoestring Lake is a splendid site to visit for more than one day, Scab Creek Campground is a splendid site to camp nearby, and Halls Mountain is easy to spot from Shoestring Lake.

Hay Pass Trail
 | I backpacked over Hay Pass (from Boulder Lake Trailhead to to Golden Lakes) last July 25. Easy ascent to pass except for stream crossings, trail gets faint for about 1/4 mi.above Dennis Lake (quite a view down to the lake. At the outlet of the unnamed lake (Beth Lake???) below the pass on the west side (at head of North Fk Boulder Cr.) water was high & swift, so I routed eastward around to the head of the lake crossing 2 inlet streams where they braid apart. through thick willows- a slow deal, but better than hip-deep swift water at the outlet. Great cutthroat fishing at Victor Lake (on fish to 19) during a hail storm. Guess the fish thought the hail was a swarm of bugs. Saw nobody else from Victor lk. to Golden Lks and back (3 days). Not the most spectacular scenery in the range (peaks are mostly round-topped, not like the jagged peaks to the north or south), but no people and great fishing (Golden Lakes had lots of 14 goldens but they were not biting- typical of goldens). Going in again this July, only farther this time, north of Golden Lakes. Anybody going that way?... |

I went up there 15 years ago and just got back from another week this last weekend....the fishing was much, much better in the past. I think the WY Game and Fish spends all their golden trout stocking funds on wolves now. The stocking ended the year the wolves were reintroduced.........Hmmm, isn't that interesting! Also....too many llamas and horses bringing the light-weights up the mountain to clutter the place this time....the trails looked like a lost group of Custard's cavalry must still be riding the trails. :( But the beauty of the area will always remain. Thank you, Lord, for your beautiful handiwork.... |
Scab Lake Trail
| scab lake trail is not one for the weak, it is a hard climb with outstanding rewards of beauty & huge high powered brilliantly colored brook trout up to 6 lbs that we know of in scab lake! oh almost forgot the last time I went was July 5 it snowed at scab 18 plus inches, I hope that I remembered to tell that the 11 mile trail to the scab lake is a hard hard climb, I have only made it 3 times to the lake thanks Allen Eagle concrete worker & stock car racer Jackson Hole... |

Lake seemed fishless although a beautiful lake. Was there 2 days and only saw 1 rise. Nice place to camp though as there is low traffic. Make sure you follow outlet to avoid massive rock pile.... |
