Go to Shoestring Lake if you want to go to a nice lake. High temperatures at Shoestring Lake through the long summer days are in the 80's with night lows in the 40's. For the duration of the winter highs are in the 30's, and through the dark hours in the winter at Shoestring Lake temperatures plunge to the 10's. Camping is available at Scab Creek Campground, and the Firehole Trail is a brilliant hiking trail close by. Shoestring Lake in fact is in the middle

| | of a scenic outdoors paradise. Why not camp at Boulder Campground since you're here at Shoestring Lake, and Bull Lake Creek has a magnificent whitewater paddling spot close by.
Shoestring Lake is pretty dehydrated frequently; through the month of June you get the most rain around here, and February meanwhile is the driest month. Do stop by Halls Lake in the neighborhood of Shoestring Lake, it's a stunning lake; the vista of delightful Halls Mountain is | |

good. But wait, there's more fun things to do in the Wind River Range. While you're here at Shoestring Lake you can take a hike along the Halls Lake Trail, and Long Lake is a nearby lake that you could check out.

Hay Pass Trail
 | I backpacked over Hay Pass (from Boulder Lake Trailhead to to Golden Lakes) last July 25. Easy ascent to pass except for stream crossings, trail gets faint for about 1/4 mi.above Dennis Lake (quite a view down to the lake. At the outlet of the unnamed lake (Beth Lake???) below the pass on the west side (at head of North Fk Boulder Cr.) water was high & swift, so I routed eastward around to the head of the lake crossing 2 inlet streams where they braid apart. through thick willows- a slow deal, but better than hip-deep swift water at the outlet. Great cutthroat fishing at Victor Lake (on fish to 19) during a hail storm. Guess the fish thought the hail was a swarm of bugs. Saw nobody else from Victor lk. to Golden Lks and back (3 days). Not the most spectacular scenery in the range (peaks are mostly round-topped, not like the jagged peaks to the north or south), but no people and great fishing (Golden Lakes had lots of 14 goldens but they were not biting- typical of goldens). Going in again this July, only farther this time, north of Golden Lakes. Anybody going that way?... |

I went up there 15 years ago and just got back from another week this last weekend....the fishing was much, much better in the past. I think the WY Game and Fish spends all their golden trout stocking funds on wolves now. The stocking ended the year the wolves were reintroduced.........Hmmm, isn't that interesting! Also....too many llamas and horses bringing the light-weights up the mountain to clutter the place this time....the trails looked like a lost group of Custard's cavalry must still be riding the trails. :( But the beauty of the area will always remain. Thank you, Lord, for your beautiful handiwork.... |
Scab Lake Trail
| scab lake trail is not one for the weak, it is a hard climb with outstanding rewards of beauty & huge high powered brilliantly colored brook trout up to 6 lbs that we know of in scab lake! oh almost forgot the last time I went was July 5 it snowed at scab 18 plus inches, I hope that I remembered to tell that the 11 mile trail to the scab lake is a hard hard climb, I have only made it 3 times to the lake thanks Allen Eagle concrete worker & stock car racer Jackson Hole... |
