Rainbow Lake is a nice lake to visit. So many cool things to do here at Rainbow Lake, too nice to be true. Dry warm beds await you at Best Western Pinedale Inn, and hiking is a popular thing to do around Rainbow Lake; Middle Fork Trail is a perfect local trail. All the outdoors cool stuff in the Wind River Range will keep you coming back over and over. Dragon Head Peak is wonderful and can be seen from Rainbow Lake, and probably you're looking for nearby lakes?

This lake is so wonderful. Big Sandy Campground is a good local campground; if you've had enough of Rainbow Lake, Sunrise Lake is nearby. If you came for an overnight stay Scab Creek Campground is a good site to camp, and the Halls Lake Trail offers hiking at its best. Yeah, come up here to the Wind River Range for a perfect time. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Dream Lake Trail, and paddling on Bull Lake Creek is so much fun.
Summer brings highs in the 70's to Rainbow Lake. Once the sun is down it sinks down to the 40's. All through the wintertime highs are commonly in the 20's while the cold winter nights at Rainbow Lake are in the-10's.

I went up there 15 years ago and just got back from another week this last weekend....the fishing was much, much better in the past. I think the WY Game and Fish spends all their golden trout stocking funds on wolves now. The stocking ended the year the wolves were reintroduced.........Hmmm, isn't that interesting! Also....too many llamas and horses bringing the light-weights up the mountain to clutter the place this time....the trails looked like a lost group of Custard's cavalry must still be riding the trails. :( But the beauty of the area will always remain. Thank you, Lord, for your beautiful handiwork.... |

Hay Pass Trail
 | I backpacked over Hay Pass (from Boulder Lake Trailhead to to Golden Lakes) last July 25. Easy ascent to pass except for stream crossings, trail gets faint for about 1/4 mi.above Dennis Lake (quite a view down to the lake. At the outlet of the unnamed lake (Beth Lake???) below the pass on the west side (at head of North Fk Boulder Cr.) water was high & swift, so I routed eastward around to the head of the lake crossing 2 inlet streams where they braid apart. through thick willows- a slow deal, but better than hip-deep swift water at the outlet. Great cutthroat fishing at Victor Lake (on fish to 19) during a hail storm. Guess the fish thought the hail was a swarm of bugs. Saw nobody else from Victor lk. to Golden Lks and back (3 days). Not the most spectacular scenery in the range (peaks are mostly round-topped, not like the jagged peaks to the north or south), but no people and great fishing (Golden Lakes had lots of 14 goldens but they were not biting- typical of goldens). Going in again this July, only farther this time, north of Golden Lakes. Anybody going that way?... |

Lake seemed fishless although a beautiful lake. Was there 2 days and only saw 1 rise. Nice place to camp though as there is low traffic. Make sure you follow outlet to avoid massive rock pile.... |
