If you are traveling by, why not stop by Macs Lake. You just can't imagine the amount of outdoors amusing stuff the Wind River Range has to offer. Whitewater paddling is perfect on Boulder Creek, and if you need a place to stay Best Western Pinedale Inn is a perfect choice. A glorious spot to camp here at Macs Lake is Scab Creek Campground, and if you've had enough of Macs Lake, Edmond Lake is nearby. Having a wonderful time in the Wind River Range is easy. On

Macs Lake is a beautiful lake in the Wind River Range. You definitely have to go for Macs Lake. There is a fine hiking trail near Macs Lake called the Horseshoe Lake Trail; nearby Hat Pass is a wonderful location to go. This lake is so wonderful. If the weather is perfect here at Macs Lake, you can go for a hike along the Lake Ethel Trail, and paddling on Pole Creek is so much | |

Camping is available at Boulder Campground, obviously you could also have a look at Perry Lake if you're here; it's not far at all. High temperatures at Macs Lake during the months of summer are in the 70's while overnight
lows are generally in the 40's. For the period of the winter highs are mostly in the 20's, and nighttime lows through the wintertime for Macs Lake tend to be in the-10's. At Macs Lake you don’t see much rain; the month with most of the rain is May, and the driest month is February.

Hay Pass Trail
 | I backpacked over Hay Pass (from Boulder Lake Trailhead to to Golden Lakes) last July 25. Easy ascent to pass except for stream crossings, trail gets faint for about 1/4 mi.above Dennis Lake (quite a view down to the lake. At the outlet of the unnamed lake (Beth Lake???) below the pass on the west side (at head of North Fk Boulder Cr.) water was high & swift, so I routed eastward around to the head of the lake crossing 2 inlet streams where they braid apart. through thick willows- a slow deal, but better than hip-deep swift water at the outlet. Great cutthroat fishing at Victor Lake (on fish to 19) during a hail storm. Guess the fish thought the hail was a swarm of bugs. Saw nobody else from Victor lk. to Golden Lks and back (3 days). Not the most spectacular scenery in the range (peaks are mostly round-topped, not like the jagged peaks to the north or south), but no people and great fishing (Golden Lakes had lots of 14 goldens but they were not biting- typical of goldens). Going in again this July, only farther this time, north of Golden Lakes. Anybody going that way?... |
Scab Lake Trail
| scab lake trail is not one for the weak, it is a hard climb with outstanding rewards of beauty & huge high powered brilliantly colored brook trout up to 6 lbs that we know of in scab lake! oh almost forgot the last time I went was July 5 it snowed at scab 18 plus inches, I hope that I remembered to tell that the 11 mile trail to the scab lake is a hard hard climb, I have only made it 3 times to the lake thanks Allen Eagle concrete worker & stock car racer Jackson Hole... |

I went up there 15 years ago and just got back from another week this last weekend....the fishing was much, much better in the past. I think the WY Game and Fish spends all their golden trout stocking funds on wolves now. The stocking ended the year the wolves were reintroduced.........Hmmm, isn't that interesting! Also....too many llamas and horses bringing the light-weights up the mountain to clutter the place this time....the trails looked like a lost group of Custard's cavalry must still be riding the trails. :( But the beauty of the area will always remain. Thank you, Lord, for your beautiful handiwork.... |
