Wyoming has many beautiful lakes and Long Lake is one of them. This lake is one of the great places here in the Wind River Range. Life's too short to enjoy all the exciting things close to Long Lake. If you came for an overnight stay Scab Creek Campground is a great site to camp, and if you come at the right time of year, Bull Lake Creek offers some nice whitewater. This lake is so wonderful.

| | are some good whitewater spots on Boulder Creek, and nearby Europe Canyon is a pleasant place to go. But wait, there's more cool things to do in the Wind River Range. Have a tremendous hiking adventure along the Hay Pass Trail; going for a hike along the Firehole Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this area. Boulder Campground is a tremendous campground nearby, and you acquire a splendid panorama of Europe Peak from here.

months highs here at Long Lake reach the 80's, and throughout summer nights temperatures are in the 40's. Highs during the winter are generally in the 30's; overnight lows at Long Lake all through the winter regularly dip into the
10's. This lake is so wonderful. A lake nearby is Lake Prue, and a good close by hotel is Best Western Pinedale Inn. Not much precipitation falls here at Long Lake; June is the wettest month with most rain while February is frequently
the driest month.
Glacier Lake is a nearby lake that you could check out; hiking along the Europe Canyon Trail is good fun.

Hay Pass Trail
 | I backpacked over Hay Pass (from Boulder Lake Trailhead to to Golden Lakes) last July 25. Easy ascent to pass except for stream crossings, trail gets faint for about 1/4 mi.above Dennis Lake (quite a view down to the lake. At the outlet of the unnamed lake (Beth Lake???) below the pass on the west side (at head of North Fk Boulder Cr.) water was high & swift, so I routed eastward around to the head of the lake crossing 2 inlet streams where they braid apart. through thick willows- a slow deal, but better than hip-deep swift water at the outlet. Great cutthroat fishing at Victor Lake (on fish to 19) during a hail storm. Guess the fish thought the hail was a swarm of bugs. Saw nobody else from Victor lk. to Golden Lks and back (3 days). Not the most spectacular scenery in the range (peaks are mostly round-topped, not like the jagged peaks to the north or south), but no people and great fishing (Golden Lakes had lots of 14 goldens but they were not biting- typical of goldens). Going in again this July, only farther this time, north of Golden Lakes. Anybody going that way?... |
Scab Lake Trail
| scab lake trail is not one for the weak, it is a hard climb with outstanding rewards of beauty & huge high powered brilliantly colored brook trout up to 6 lbs that we know of in scab lake! oh almost forgot the last time I went was July 5 it snowed at scab 18 plus inches, I hope that I remembered to tell that the 11 mile trail to the scab lake is a hard hard climb, I have only made it 3 times to the lake thanks Allen Eagle concrete worker & stock car racer Jackson Hole... |

I went up there 15 years ago and just got back from another week this last weekend....the fishing was much, much better in the past. I think the WY Game and Fish spends all their golden trout stocking funds on wolves now. The stocking ended the year the wolves were reintroduced.........Hmmm, isn't that interesting! Also....too many llamas and horses bringing the light-weights up the mountain to clutter the place this time....the trails looked like a lost group of Custard's cavalry must still be riding the trails. :( But the beauty of the area will always remain. Thank you, Lord, for your beautiful handiwork.... |
