Go to Howard Lake if you want to go to a nice lake. This lake is located in the wonderful Wind River Range. So many enjoyable things to do in the Wind River Range, not enough time. Best Western Pinedale Inn is a wonderful place to get some rest; get your pulse rate up on the great whitewater of Boulder Creek. All through the summertime at Howard Lake highs are usually in the 70's. Summer overnight lows dip down to the 40's. The cold days of the winter come

| | with highs in the 20's; nighttime lows in the-10's for Howard Lake.
This place, Howard Lake, it simply has so much outdoors cool stuff. There is a magnificent hiking trail in the neighborhood of Howard Lake called the Firehole Trail, and there's whitewater on Bull Lake Creek for all you thrill seekers. You could also stop by Wilderness Lake while you're here at Howard Lake; it's nearby, and the peak of Halls Butte can be observed from Howard Lake. This | |

Howard Lake is not the only place close by, Pipestone Lakes is a close by lake. You'll need more than a day to explore everything Howard Lake has to offer, you can camp at Scab Creek Campground. Howard Lake
gets very little precipitation; May is when you get the most rain here, and the driest of the months is February. This place, the Wind River Range, has so much outdoors cool stuff. Some of the water nearby flows, like Halls Creek,
and going for a hike on the Europe Canyon Trail is always a good adventure.
This lake is so wonderful. There's so much to do here at Howard Lake that you need to camp here for a while, Boulder Campground is a splendid site for that, and nearby you locate the Lake Isabella Trail which is a fine hiking trail.

Hay Pass Trail
 | I backpacked over Hay Pass (from Boulder Lake Trailhead to to Golden Lakes) last July 25. Easy ascent to pass except for stream crossings, trail gets faint for about 1/4 mi.above Dennis Lake (quite a view down to the lake. At the outlet of the unnamed lake (Beth Lake???) below the pass on the west side (at head of North Fk Boulder Cr.) water was high & swift, so I routed eastward around to the head of the lake crossing 2 inlet streams where they braid apart. through thick willows- a slow deal, but better than hip-deep swift water at the outlet. Great cutthroat fishing at Victor Lake (on fish to 19) during a hail storm. Guess the fish thought the hail was a swarm of bugs. Saw nobody else from Victor lk. to Golden Lks and back (3 days). Not the most spectacular scenery in the range (peaks are mostly round-topped, not like the jagged peaks to the north or south), but no people and great fishing (Golden Lakes had lots of 14 goldens but they were not biting- typical of goldens). Going in again this July, only farther this time, north of Golden Lakes. Anybody going that way?... |
Scab Lake Trail
| scab lake trail is not one for the weak, it is a hard climb with outstanding rewards of beauty & huge high powered brilliantly colored brook trout up to 6 lbs that we know of in scab lake! oh almost forgot the last time I went was July 5 it snowed at scab 18 plus inches, I hope that I remembered to tell that the 11 mile trail to the scab lake is a hard hard climb, I have only made it 3 times to the lake thanks Allen Eagle concrete worker & stock car racer Jackson Hole... |

I went up there 15 years ago and just got back from another week this last weekend....the fishing was much, much better in the past. I think the WY Game and Fish spends all their golden trout stocking funds on wolves now. The stocking ended the year the wolves were reintroduced.........Hmmm, isn't that interesting! Also....too many llamas and horses bringing the light-weights up the mountain to clutter the place this time....the trails looked like a lost group of Custard's cavalry must still be riding the trails. :( But the beauty of the area will always remain. Thank you, Lord, for your beautiful handiwork.... |
