     Larson Lake is a nearby lake that you could stop by, and you can run the rapids of Prairie River. That right there is heaps already, but it goes on; Mud Lake has it all. If you like skiing, you're in luck; Granite Peak is in the neighborhood of Mud Lake, and Mud Lake is great enough to spend more than a day at, Council Grounds State Park is a great local campground. This lake is so wonderful. A brilliant nearby hotel is Pine Ridge Inn, and there are plenty  
   of people from Merrill here. After a long day outdoors Super 8 Merrill/City Of Parks is a wonderful place to spend a night or two; a lake nearby is Black Alder Lake.
Mud Lake gets a normal amount of annual precipitation; September is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest month of the year is February. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 70's to Mud Lake. Summer night lows descend down to the 50's. Highs during the winter are mostly in
 
               the 10's, and overnight lows during the winter for Mud Lake tend to be in the-10's. A tremendous location to camp here at Mud Lake is Birkensee Resort; a pleasant place for whitewater paddling is Pine River.

This is a 4-5 hour drive from the n/w side of Chicago . . . and *definately* worth it. Some buddies and I go up for a few days every winter and I have to say, this is the best you're going to find without doubling your driving time or hopping on an airplane....
i have lived and snowboarded in Colorado and Austria.
For the Midwest only Lutsen in Minn. can be compared!
The vertical keeps you challenged unlike the resorts in the U.P. and the rest of the Midwest! Only 3 hrs from Milwaukee!!!
love it if you are in the Midwest and can't head WEST!!!...
