Ahnapee State Trail
 | 12 miles away ...ip and bike from Casco to Potowotami State Park. Don’t bother buying food to carry; you get to buy it at the end of the ride!
Maybe have breakfast to start the trip in Luxemburg or Casco to start the trip off right and to help the local economy (Casco has a population of 560 people).
Bicycle the trail to Algoma and spend a couple of hours noodling around the maritime village, dip your feet in Lake Michigan, and have lunch at one of the local and affordable Algoma restaurants.
Note that there are several apple trees along the way. Unlike today’s apples which are mostly highbred grafts, these heritage breed apples are trees started from the railmen throwing their apple cores out the windows of the train. In the fall, the apples are ripe, plentiful, free, and very flavorful. Pick some up to make a cobbler at camp that evening.
Finally, you pass through Sturgeon Bay on the way to Potowatomi State Park. Buy your food for the evening at one of the locally owned groceries. Then on to Potowotomi State Park.
In the summer, getting a reservation at Potowotomi... |
