     Birkensee Resort is a pleasant local campground, and Americinn - Merrill, Wi is a great place to get some rest. Summertime brings highs in the 70's to Black Alder Lake. Once the sun is down it descends down to the 50's. During the winter highs are generally in the 10's, and overnight lows throughout the wintertime for Black Alder Lake tend to be in the-10's. Now, you may think that's heaps but there's even more exciting stuff to do here at Black Alder Lake.  
   Granite Peak is a perfect local ski area, and you're probably addicted to lakes, Mud Lake is one of those close by. Black Alder Lake is a good place of common precipitation; the month with most of the rain is September; the driest of the months is February.
This lake is so wonderful. You'll meet a lot of people from Merrill here; get yourself into a kayak and hit Pine River. Why not camp at Council Grounds State Park while you're here at Black Alder Lake;
 
               get covered with water paddling on Prairie River.
This is a glorious neighborhood for people who like lakes. Larson Lake is a lake in the neighborhood, and a delightful close by hotel is Pine Ridge Inn.

This is a 4-5 hour drive from the n/w side of Chicago . . . and *definately* worth it. Some buddies and I go up for a few days every winter and I have to say, this is the best you're going to find without doubling your driving time or hopping on an airplane....

For the Midwest only Lutsen in Minn. can be compared!
The vertical keeps you challenged unlike the resorts in the U.P. and the rest of the Midwest! Only 3 hrs from Milwaukee!!!
love it if you are in the Midwest and can't head WEST!!!...
