There are some splendid whitewater spots on Pine River; since you might be in a lake visiting mood you can always stop by close by Ackerman Lake. This location is unbeatable, just check out all the amusing stuff to do next to Black Alder Lake. The best way to spend a winter day is on the slopes of nearby Granite Peak. If you need a place to stay Americinn - Merrill, Wi is a good choice,                  and if you come at the right time of year, Prairie River offers some great whitewater.
