 | Roundtrip Distance 13.4 miles Elevation Gain 2,598 ft. This peak is trailless, meaning a portion or all of the route up the mountain is via an unmarked trail. For this particular mountain, the typical route is known as a ''herd path'' which is not much more than a worn, but unmarked trail. Some of the herd paths are easy to follow, others are not. In many instances the hiker will travel down a false herd path and eventually have to correct his/her course via backtracking. Bench Lake
 | 14 miles away 1 PHOTO This is Bench Lake in the Bird Creek area of Mt. Adams, Washington. This is located on the Yakama Reservation portion of land called Tract D which was Treaty land deeded back to the tribes in 1973. Mt. Adams plays peekaboo here with Little Mt. Adams. The ranger of this area, Richard Canapo, stays in a trailer up the hill at the entrance by Mirror Lake and is a good source of local information as well as maps of the trails in the area. Permits are as follows: Entry permit... $5. 00 for a 5 day entry fee Camping and fishing permits are in addition to entry fees and are: Camping... $10. 00 per night per space Fishing ... $5. 00 per day or $10. 00 for 5 days You can have up to 12 pieces of split firewood per night of camping. I should add that the road in to this lake is a bit rough and rocky, a narrow dirt road. Be cautious watching for other traffic, and I would not take an extremely low car in here. Last trip someone put a hole in a crankcase of a PT Cruiser... This can be avoided by careful driving! ... |
Granite Lake
| 17 miles away Granite Lake has crystal clear water, is surrounded by a very primtive campground. I don't recall how many campsites there are, but I have never been there when there was more than one other party. The surrounding area is incredibly beautiful, well worth the extremely rough road in. 4 wheel drive only. There is an abandoned copper mine in the area, and if you can find the trailhead, (good luck), the scenery is breathtaking. I've been to the mine 3 times. Watch out for bears! There is a ghost town below the copper mine. Very little is left. There are picnic tables, no water and no bathrooms. Come prepared.... |
