This lake is so wonderful. This is a glorious area for folks who like lakes. Long Lake is a lake in the neighborhood, and if the weather is good, you can go for a hike along the Brush Creek Trail. The Central Cascade Range scenery is always beautiful. This spot, the Central Cascade Range, has so much outdoors enjoyable stuff. Shellrock Mountain is wonderful and can be seen from New Lake, and get yourself into a kayak and hit Hood River - West Fork. During

| | the summer highs here at New Lake get into the 70's, and during the night it cools down to the 50's. Highs all through the wintertime are generally in the 40's with winter lows in the 30's overnight here at New Lake. All the water falling down from the sky makes New Lake a wet place; the month of December is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest month is July. Wyeth Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this region, and Columbia Gorge Motel is a good location to get some rest. This lake is so wonderful. Why not take a look at Collins Point also if you're here, and glide down
the rapids of Little White Salmon River in a kayak. So much enjoyable stuff to do in the Central Cascade Range, not enough time. Hiking along the Pacific Crest Trail - section 23 is good fun; there's no such thing as a bad day of
skiing at close by Cooper Spur. A magnificent location to camp here at New Lake is Wind Mountain Resort, and if you need a spot to stay Rodeway Inn Stevenson is a great choice. Just can't get enough of New Lake. There's always
Berge Reservoir Dam to take a look at in the neighborhood of New Lake; New Lake is wonderful enough to spend more than a day at, Timberlake Campground is a wonderful local campground. Getting to Collins Creek from New Lake is simple,
and you can hit the slopes at Mt. Hood Meadows in the vicinity. Lakes are wonderful; Middle Lake is a lake that's in the neighborhood of New Lake, and during your journey here you'll meet some folks from Hood River for sure. There's no way someone can get bored here in the Central Cascade Range.

Pacific Crest Trail - section 23
 | Roundtrip Distance 16 miles Elevation Gain 2,620 ft. This peak is trailless, meaning a portion or all of the route up the mountain is via an unmarked trail. For this particular mountain, the typical route is known as a ''herd path'' which is not much more than a worn, but unmarked trail. Some of the herd paths are easy to follow, others are not. In many instances the hiker will travel down a false herd path and eventually have to correct his/her course via backtracking. For these particular mountains, it is imperative that the hiker carry a compass (and know how to use it) and topographic map.... |

Little Ashes Lake
 | 12 miles away Since the previous post was negative, I was skeptical about fishing there. I sent a couple of hours fishing there at one of the few access spots to see how it fished. I was fortunate enough to land a trout about 27 inches long. Not to bad for a couple hours. Caught using a rooster tail spinner. Gotta give it a try....Little Ashes lake is a medium sized spillway from the Columbia River. There is not much public access to the lake. The lake is boundaried on the southwest side by Highway 14. and all the rest is Private property. No way to launch a boat, but I have float tubed it. There are no trails to hike around this lake. You won't want to swim in it since it is columbia river water. The fishing is unproductive as i fished it and never caught a single bass or trout, only sucker fish and perch. My advice is to just enjoy the sight of this lake, but venturing into it is a waste of time.... |
