This lake is so wonderful. There's so much to do here at Lava Lakes that you need to camp here for a while, Dolce Skamania Lodge is a wonderful spot for that, and if you get bored of Lava Lakes you could also have a look at nearby Bowles Lakes. Lava Lakes is right by the Tanner Butte Trail; since you're here and you like golf, you can pop by Beacon Rock Golf Course. Hiking along the Eagle Creek Trail is delightful fun, and Trout Creek has a nice whitewater
   paddling spot nearby.
Lava Lakes gets much water; the month of December is the wettest with most of the rain while July is generally the driest month. At Lava Lakes during the summer highs are in the 70's, and the night is rather chillier of course, usually in the 50's. Highs during the winter are ordinarily in the 40's with winter lows in the 30's overnight here at Lava Lakes. The Northern Cascade Range scenery is always beautiful.
And that's not everything

you can do here in the Northern Cascade Range. Hot Springs is always fun to check out; Lava Lakes is not the only site nearby, Mosley Lakes is a nearby lake. This lake is so wonderful. If you need a spot to stay Best Western Columbia River Inn is a good choice, and whitewater paddling is magnificent on Panther Creek. If only every site had this much outdoors exciting things, what a great world it would be. After a long day outdoors Skamania Lodge is a good site to spend a night or two; Rock Cove is relatively close.
And if that's not enough, there's lots more to do close to Lava Lakes. Little Brush Lake Dam is worth visiting while you're here. Just can't get enough of the Northern Cascade Range. If you're here at Lava Lakes, you could stop by Ruckel Creek, and the Tanner Cutoff Trail offers hiking at its best. If you came to camp Marine Park and Campground is a wonderful location to do that, and at Lava Lakes you always meet someone from Hood River.

Little Ashes Lake
Since the previous post was negative, I was skeptical about fishing there. I sent a couple of hours fishing there at one of the few access spots to see how it fished. I was fortunate enough to land a trout about 27 inches long. Not to bad for a couple hours. Caught using a rooster tail spinner. Gotta give it a try....Little Ashes lake is a medium sized spillway from the Columbia River. There is not much public access to the lake. The lake is boundaried on the southwest side by Highway 14. and all the rest is Private property. No way to launch a boat, but I have float tubed it. There are no trails to hike around this lake. You won't want to swim in it since it is columbia river water. The fishing is unproductive as i fished it and never caught a single bass or trout, only sucker fish and perch. My advice is to just enjoy the sight of this lake, but venturing into it is a waste of time....

Kidney Lake
It's nice....

Wind River
Hello,

Anybody who puts-in where the road map link on the webpage indicates and expects to find class IV-V water is going to be disappointed. The put-in is on the right bank slightly downstream of where the map shows the take-out (basically, at Stabler) and the take-out is on the right bank a half-mile or so above High Bridge (where the red line crosses the river on the map).

Regards,
Will...
Hello,

I run this section of the Wind regularly and I have never heard anybody refer to it as Ranger Station Close to Stabler to High Bridge. It's common names are Stabler to High Bridge and the Upper Wind. The putin is much closer to Stabler than to the Ranger Station near Stabler (which is actually closer to the put-in on Trout Creek).

Regards,
Will...

Herman Creek Trail
The Herman Creek Trail was constructed for foot access to the old site of a wartime lookout built to spot ballon bomb sent over by Japan. There were three cabins just past the cliff road and the end of the Herman Creek cut-off trail which statrted at seven and a half mile camp in what was once Cedder Swamp just below Mud Lake....

Roundtrip Distance 16 miles

This peak is trailless, meaning a portion or all of the route up the mountain is via an unmarked trail. For this particular mountain, the typical route is known as a ''herd path'' which is not much more than a worn, but unmarked trail. Some of the herd paths are easy to follow, others are not. In many instances the hiker will travel down a false herd path and eventually have to correct his/her course via backtracking. For these particular mountains, it is imperative that the hiker carry a compass (and know how to use it) and topographic map....
