| | This lake is so wonderful. If you need a place to stay Skamania Lodge is a nice choice, and you'll locate a charming lake called Ridell Lake. Be careful coming to the Central Cascade Range, you might not ever wanna go back home again. Don't leave Franz Lake without first going for a hike along the Green Leaf Trail, and while you're here, you could also stop at charming Wahkeena Rearing Lake. This lake is so wonderful. Camping is available at Dougan Creek | |

Campground, and the vista of Archer Mountain is delightful. If you come at the right time of year, Stebbins Creek offers some perfect whitewater, and unsurprisingly Horsetail Creek flows through this region. But wait, there's
more to do right next door to Franz Lake. Put some time aside to spend at Horsetail Falls since you're here at Franz Lake; after a long day outdoors Bonneville Hot Springs Resort is a nice place to spend a night or two. A good place
to camp here at Franz Lake is Beacon Rock Resort. That right there is a lot of fun stuff already but it goes on, the Central Cascade Range has it all. There's wonderful hiking along the Washougal Trail, and whitewater paddling is
not for everybody but if it's for you then, we recommend Rock Creek - Columbia River Tributary. Hiking is a popular thing to do around Franz Lake; Big Bend Trail is a good local trail, and nearby Oneonta Gorge is a tremendous location to go. Franz Lake is a beautiful lake in the Central Cascade Range.

Little Ashes Lake
 | 11 miles away Since the previous post was negative, I was skeptical about fishing there. I sent a couple of hours fishing there at one of the few access spots to see how it fished. I was fortunate enough to land a trout about 27 inches long. Not to bad for a couple hours. Caught using a rooster tail spinner. Gotta give it a try....Little Ashes lake is a medium sized spillway from the Columbia River. There is not much public access to the lake. The lake is boundaried on the southwest side by Highway 14. and all the rest is Private property. No way to launch a boat, but I have float tubed it. There are no trails to hike around this lake. You won't want to swim in it since it is columbia river water. The fishing is unproductive as i fished it and never caught a single bass or trout, only sucker fish and perch. My advice is to just enjoy the sight of this lake, but venturing into it is a waste of time.... |

Bighorn Campground
 | 19 miles away Have you been to the Bighorn campground site???While this is a beautiful pack-in, primitive site, it doesn't fit with your description. Before camping, take a hike on Nat. Forest Trail 742, without gear. After you've scoped the area, come back and stay. Even on Labor Day Weekend ('06) there were several campsites available in this dispersed camp area.... |
