day outdoors Best Western Columbia River Inn is a pleasant site to spend a night or two. That right there is a lot already, but it keeps on going; Black Lake has it all. Get covered with water paddling on Rock Creek - Columbia River
Tributary, and getting to Eagle Creek from Black Lake is painless. Take a hike on the Eagle Creek Trail, and if you need a place to stay Skamania Lodge is a great choice. This lake is so wonderful. Lakes? Sure, Hazel Lake is close
by, and The (historical) Cascades is an inspiring place to stop at while here. Black Lake sees pretty high levels of rainfall; December is when you get the most rain here, and the driest month of the year is July. This lake is
so wonderful. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Tanner Butte Trail, and you don’t have to go far from Black Lake to spot the water at Bonneville Dam. Having a great time in the Northern Cascade Range is painless. If you want
to play some golf, you're in luck because Beacon Rock Golf Course is close by, and Wauna Point is rather close. This is no place for people who don’t like to have a good time.

Little Ashes Lake
 | Since the previous post was negative, I was skeptical about fishing there. I sent a couple of hours fishing there at one of the few access spots to see how it fished. I was fortunate enough to land a trout about 27 inches long. Not to bad for a couple hours. Caught using a rooster tail spinner. Gotta give it a try....Little Ashes lake is a medium sized spillway from the Columbia River. There is not much public access to the lake. The lake is boundaried on the southwest side by Highway 14. and all the rest is Private property. No way to launch a boat, but I have float tubed it. There are no trails to hike around this lake. You won't want to swim in it since it is columbia river water. The fishing is unproductive as i fished it and never caught a single bass or trout, only sucker fish and perch. My advice is to just enjoy the sight of this lake, but venturing into it is a waste of time.... |

Herman Creek Trail
 | The Herman Creek Trail was constructed for foot access to the old site of a wartime lookout built to spot ballon bomb sent over by Japan. There were three cabins just past the cliff road and the end of the Herman Creek cut-off trail which statrted at seven and a half mile camp in what was once Cedder Swamp just below Mud Lake.... |
Wind River
 | Hello,
Anybody who puts-in where the road map link on the webpage indicates and expects to find class IV-V water is going to be disappointed. The put-in is on the right bank slightly downstream of where the map shows the take-out (basically, at Stabler) and the take-out is on the right bank a half-mile or so above High Bridge (where the red line crosses the river on the map).
Regards, Will...Hello,
I run this section of the Wind regularly and I have never heard anybody refer to it as Ranger Station Close to Stabler to High Bridge. It's common names are Stabler to High Bridge and the Upper Wind. The putin is much closer to Stabler than to the Ranger Station near Stabler (which is actually closer to the put-in on Trout Creek).

Pacific Crest Trail - section 23
 | 11 miles away Roundtrip Distance 16 miles Elevation Gain 2,620 ft. This peak is trailless, meaning a portion or all of the route up the mountain is via an unmarked trail. For this particular mountain, the typical route is known as a ''herd path'' which is not much more than a worn, but unmarked trail. Some of the herd paths are easy to follow, others are not. In many instances the hiker will travel down a false herd path and eventually have to correct his/her course via backtracking. For these particular mountains, it is imperative that the hiker carry a compass (and know how to use it) and topographic map.... |
