Lake Ben sees pretty high levels of precipitation; the month with most of the rain is December while July is regularly the driest month. This lake is so wonderful. Camping at Brown Creek Campground is always a nice experience. The top of Mount Duckabush is easily distinguished from Lake Ben, and Lake Ben is tremendous enough to spend more than a day at, Staircase Campground is a tremendous local campground. | | time of the year are in the 70's with nighttime lows in the 50's. High temperatures all through the winter are normally in the 40's while Lake Ben nighttime low temperatures during the winter are in the 30's. Lake Ben is one of the lakes here in the Olympic Mountains. If you're here, you might as well stop by O'Neil Pass; perfect hiking is available along the Skyline Trail. This lake is so wonderful. Lake Ben is a glorious site to go to; going for a hike on the Elwha River Trail is always a splendid adventure. Yeah, come up here to the Olympic Mountains for a tremendous time. Really fine skiing awaits you at Hurricane Ridge Ski
Lodge, and a trip to Olympic National Park is worthwhile. Be careful coming to the Olympic Mountains, you might not ever want to go home again. Lakes are such calm sites, why not have a look at Hart Lake close to Lake Ben; whitewater
paddling is magnificent on Skokomish River - North Fork. Just can't get enough of Lake Ben. Take a side tour to Eight Stream; you can go for a hike on the Long Ridge Trail.

Yes the Elwha River trail is only 18 miles away but that is by trail straight through the heart of the Olympic Mtns. And park. ...Wynoochee Falls campground has been closed and the campground sign, firepits, restroom and tables removed. You?ll have to drive about 15 miles of gravel road to get here. There is a rock pedestal with a missing sign along the Wynoochee road 4 miles NE of the lake near the end of the road. This marks the parking area and access trail down to the falls. The ? mile trail is interrupted with large ditches to discourage access and camping. The waterfall is only about 100 feet high, (maybe less) but very picturesque, with a large clear basin at its base and an outlet scoured through granite rocks.... |

Upper Elk Lake
 | 16 miles away It's been about 6yrs. since I was last at upper Elk Lake,It was my most favorite place to camp. If you were lucky, and got the only camp site on the lake,the lake was yours. The water was so crystal clear, you could almost see the bottom. The fishing was't bad either. There are plenty of trails and creeks to explore.Including Jefferson creek, which will lead you to lower Elk Lake. My children loved this spot as much as I. There was also a rope swing on the other side of the lake.It was heaven. My youngest daughter traveled back to the lake this summer (2008). She says the lake is destroyed, with water plants and logs,she says the water is no longer clear. This makes me sad, I may just have to plan a trip to see for myself.... |

We got stuck at the intersection for 3? hours on Thursday, August 7, as the road didn't open until 6:30 p.m. Rumor is that the paving work and road closures will continue for the next two years....WHEN YOU TAKE THE HIKE AROUND THE LAKE BE SURE YOU TAKE WATER AND FOOD. IT'S A BEAUTIFUL, BUT 12 MILES AND 6 HRS. TO COMPLETE. ENJOY !!!... |
