     Big Mud Pond is one of the lakes here in the Green Mountains. A quick journey to Three Shanties Brook close to Big Mud Pond is a magnificent idea, and you ought to absolutely dedicate some time to Swale Meadow if you're here at Big Mud Pond. If you come at the right time of year, Big Branch offers some wonderful whitewater, and after a long day outdoors Stratton Mountain Resort is a fine place to spend a night or two.
That right there is lots of exciting
 
   things already but it goes on, the Green Mountains has it all. Having a nice time at Big Mud Pond is easy. Very scenic scenery and nice skiing is what you get at Snow Valley, and there is a brilliant hiking trail nearby called the Staples Trail. The peak of Buckball Peak can be spotted from Big Mud Pond, and Avalanche Motel is a splendid place to get some rest.
Be careful coming to the Green Mountains, you might not ever want to go home again. On a great
 
               day at Big Mud Pond you can take a hike along the Old Job Trail, and Long Hole is a brilliant lake close by. All the outdoors exciting stuff next to Big Mud Pond will keep you coming back again and again. Near Big Mud Pond you locate the Jones Brook Trail which is a great hiking trail, and the cheerful people of Rutland like to hang out nearby. This lake is so wonderful. A magnificent location to camp here at Big Mud Pond is Otter Creek Campground, and if you like swamps you're in luck, Elbow Swamp is right close by.
Summer brings highs in the 80's to Big Mud Pond; the night is quite colder of course, usually in the 50's. For the period of the wintertime the highs are commonly in the 20's; winter nights come with lows in the 0's to Big Mud Pond. Yeah, come up here to the Green Mountains for a splendid time. Gotta ski! Bromley is a fine place to do that, and whitewater paddling is not for everybody but if it's for you then, we recommend Mill River. All the water falling down from the sky makes Big Mud Pond a wet site; most of the rain falls all through August; the driest month is February.
This lake is so wonderful. Camping at Campground A is always a splendid experience, and there are other sites here than Big Mud Pond, for example Little Mud Pond.

Easy going trail from Mt Tabor to Rocky Pond, a 4 mile round trip, 1 1/2 to 2 hour hike. The hike is well worth seeing this breath taking pond. Very secluded & peaceful with tent sites and one or two shelters. Over night stays are 5.00 per person, per night. If you love 'roughing it' camping, this is a great place to go. I am enclosing a picture i took on June 19th 2007....
