Cedar Creek
My wife & I canoed this in March of 1986. What I remember, we would go into these curves & it was the most beautiful green pools of clear water. You could see to the bottom. There was a low-water bridge that we had to carry the canoe over. We floated on downstream & just before dark we pulled over to camp. Where we camped was a couple of miles above the waterfall on river left. We had a little party & had taken a little 5 TV & watched David Letterman. The next morning we canoed past the waterfall, past a suspension bridge, paddled several easy class II rapids, & I think we took out at the bridge that was about 3 miles above the Shenandoah River. There was a beautiful old white farmhouse on river right. In summary, Cedar Creek in the upper part has decent current, beautiful pools, flowing through rolling farmland & transitions to microgorges. We have moved to another state & miss doing this trip. ...

Woodstock Reservoir
10 miles away Woodstock is an excellent mid summer place to fly fish if not just for the scenery and tranquility of the area. This cold deep reservoir is excellent for catching brookies. Don't be surprised to get chilled if sticking your feet in the water. I fish the reservoir along with the Little Stoney Creek several times during the summer months. Little Stoney has a wonderful population of native brookies....

Hannah Run Trail
18 miles away As of 2008 I have been the Potomac Appalacian Trail Club overseer for Hannah Run Trail. The trail is about 4 miles in length. You can access from Skyline Drive; but I hike up from the Old Rag Mountain parking lot near Nethers, VA. It is a two mile hike from the parking lot, on Nicholson Hollow trail, before you actually hit Hannah Run trail. I maintain the first two miles of Hannah Run trail from Nicholson Hollow trail. The trail starts off with an easy slope, running parrallel with Hannah Run for about 1.5 miles. The next .5 miles is rather steep, but the trail is sound. My two mile segment of the trail ends with the trail crosses Hannah Run. I have heard that the remaining 2 miles of trail up to Skyline Drive is very steep. There are a number of old chimneys along the trail as you head up the mountain. Thom Savage, Fredericksburg, VA...
