August is not a wet month in this area! It tends to be drought time in Aug. and median temps are in the 90's not 80's. Great spot....

Whitlock Millpond
19 miles away
Whitlock Millpond (very old maps show it as Hancock's Mill Pond) used to be a beautiful place. It was hard to get to and, as a result, I only visited once when I went fishing there as a child with my father and my grandfather (early- to mid-1960s). It was a wild, snaky place. My grandfather, who lived nearby, told me the dam which fed the abandoned mill had been built by slaves using stone quarried nearby.
Sadly, the dam was breached and the remains of the mill were swept away by the flooding that accompanied Hurricane Camille in 1968. Since then, what was the pond has filled with trees and only a small creek remains. In 2006 I tried to get over to where the remains of the dam are, but the owner of the land I had to cross just looked at me like I had lost my mind. I guess it is wilder and snakier than ever now....

Rivanna River
19 miles away
Last Saturday July 11th,2009 My son and his buddy, both 11 year old decided to canoe the rivanna river . We put the canoe at Shadwell near the bridge and came out at the cross road in Fluvanna county between 53 and 15. The trip took us 7 hours, 4 hours from Shadwell to Crafton and 3 hours from Crafton to Fluvanna court house. I though this could be a good information for the new comer in this area . I couldn't find any information about the time that this trip will take, well I hope this data will help other fellow persons.

PS: It was wonderful experience for everybody...
