Virginia has many beautiful lakes and Merrimac Lake is one of them. And that's not all you can do here at Merrimac Lake. Going for a hike on the Broad Hollow Trail is always a brilliant adventure, and after a long day outdoors Best Western Culpeper Inn is a fine place to spend a night or two. Since you might be in a lake visiting mood you can always pop by close by Mountain Run Lake, and whitewater paddling is wonderful on Robinson River. From a rain point of
view Merrimac Lake is a quite common spot; August is when you get the most rain here, and January meanwhile is the driest month.
Lake Anna State Park is a good campground nearby. For the period of the long summer days at Merrimac Lake highs are ordinarily in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures sink down into the 60's. High temperatures during the wintertime are normally in the 40's, and nighttime lows in the 10's for Merrimac Lake. If you need a

place to stay Rodeway Inn Culpeper is a splendid choice. Lakes? Sure, Caynor Lake is nearby.
This lake is so wonderful. Cedar Mountain Campground is a delightful local campground, and there is a glorious hiking trail close by called the Sams Ridge Trail. In the event that you don’t have a problem getting dripping wet, you can always go whitewater paddling on Hughes River and Hazel River, and close by you locate the White Rocks Trail which is a great hiking trail.

Hughes River and Hazel River
If you are paddling the hazel this is a heads up when taking out at the low water bridge on monument mills road. The property owners there are real not so friendly. They think they own the river itself. Just a heads up....Some B and B's are near the put-in and take-out for the Hughes. La Bella Terra at 605 and 606 in Madison County is a weekend B and B in season (May-September)and near the take out. It also offers farmhouse dining on Sat. 540 547 2317....

Robinson River

this is a fun stretch of whitewater. i have run numerous times and have enjoyed it every time i would recomend it for anyone. it has a few class 2-3 ledges that are lots of fun and uncountable gravel bars and small rock gardens....near the end there is a nice way to end your trip with a swimming hole complete with a rope swing and all!!!!...

Hannah Run Trail
18 miles away
As of 2008 I have been the Potomac Appalacian Trail Club overseer for Hannah Run Trail. The trail is about 4 miles in length. You can access from Skyline Drive; but I hike up from the Old Rag Mountain parking lot near Nethers, VA. It is a two mile hike from the parking lot, on Nicholson Hollow trail, before you actually hit Hannah Run trail. I maintain the first two miles of Hannah Run trail from Nicholson Hollow trail. The trail starts off with an easy slope, running parrallel with Hannah Run for about 1.5 miles. The next .5 miles is rather steep, but the trail is sound. My two mile segment of the trail ends with the trail crosses Hannah Run. I have heard that the remaining 2 miles of trail up to Skyline Drive is very steep. There are a number of old chimneys along the trail as you head up the mountain. Thom Savage, Fredericksburg, VA...
