Rappahannock River has a perfect whitewater paddling spot close by; camping at Rappahannock River Campground is always a great experience. Wilderness Run Lake is a wonderful lake close to Lee Lake; enjoy a round of golf at Somerset Golf Club. A large amount of precipitation falls at Lee Lake; most of the rain falls during May, and the driest of the months is January. Residence Inn Fredericksburg is a great place to get some rest; Lee Lake is great enough to spend more than a day at, Wilderness Presidential Resort is a great local campground. This lake is so wonderful. There are other locations here than Lee Lake, for example Grant Lake, and a cool spot to stop at is Hays Monument.

a great vista of Hamiltons Thicket. What a location this is for outdoors people. Good hiking is available along the Jackson Trail, also Lee Lake Dam is worth taking a look at while you're here. For the period of the summertime at
Lee Lake highs are typically in the 80's; the overnight is quite chillier of course, mostly in the 60's. For the period of the winter highs are ordinarily in the 40's; during the dark hours in the winter at Lee Lake temperatures plunge to the 20's.

I came to this web site for information on Motts Run Reservoir. Not to find out what is in the area. Are there boat rentals at Motts Run? If so how much are they. Is Motts Run a park with places to cook and eat? Can you camp there? Do they allow fishing there? Can you go swiming there? Can you bring your own boat?If so are there any limits on size or type of boat. If they allow fishing what kind of fish are there? Whitlock Millpond

Whitlock Millpond (very old maps show it as Hancock's Mill Pond) used to be a beautiful place. It was hard to get to and, as a result, I only visited once when I went fishing there as a child with my father and my grandfather (early- to mid-1960s). It was a wild, snaky place. My grandfather, who lived nearby, told me the dam which fed the abandoned mill had been built by slaves using stone quarried nearby.
Sadly, the dam was breached and the remains of the mill were swept away by the flooding that accompanied Hurricane Camille in 1968. Since then, what was the pond has filled with trees and only a small creek remains. In 2006 I tried to get over to where the remains of the dam are, but the owner of the land I had to cross just looked at me like I had lost my mind. I guess it is wilder and snakier than ever now.... |
