A delightful nearby hotel is Residence Inn Fredericksburg, and at Lake Of The Woods Dam right next door to Lake of the Woods there are some interesting things to see. This lake is so wonderful. After a long day outdoors Hilton Garden Inn Fredericksburg is a glorious spot to spend a night or two. Lakes? Sure, Wilderness Run Lake is close at hand. Get wet paddling on Rappahannock River, and since you might be in a lake visiting mood you can always take a look at

Highs throughout the wintertime are regularly in the 40's, and after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at Lake of the Woods dip into the 20's. A round of golf at nearby Somerset Golf Club is a great way to kill some time, and if you're here, you could check out Lick Branch. | |

All the water falling down from the sky makes Lake of the Woods a wet place; May is when you get the most rain here while January is typically the driest month. Why not camp at Wilderness Presidential Resort since you're here at Lake
of the Woods, and do take a hike on the Jackson Trail. This lake is so wonderful. The top of Shotgun Hill is easily observed from Lake of the Woods. Now, you may feel that's heaps but there's even more fun stuff to do here at
Lake of the Woods. Get yourself into a kayak and hit Rappahannock River, and a nice spot to camp here at Lake of the Woods is Rappahannock River Campground.

Rappahannock River
 | There is also another pit in point at a spot called Elies Ford road, and that is a 14 mile trip great scenery. Also even though it is a class I and II river. It is easier to use a kayak also during the summer you will want a kayak because of the extream low water in some spots.... |

Motts Run Reservoir
 | 14 miles away I came to this web site for information on Motts Run Reservoir. Not to find out what is in the area. Are there boat rentals at Motts Run? If so how much are they. Is Motts Run a park with places to cook and eat? Can you camp there? Do they allow fishing there? Can you go swiming there? Can you bring your own boat?If so are there any limits on size or type of boat. If they allow fishing what kind of fish are there? Are there any restrictions on type or size of fish that can be caught? How do I get to Motts run? What kind of roads am I going to travel on? Is there a phone number that I can use to make reservations if needed? What hours is Motts Run open?... |
Whitlock Millpond
 | 19 miles away Whitlock Millpond (very old maps show it as Hancock's Mill Pond) used to be a beautiful place. It was hard to get to and, as a result, I only visited once when I went fishing there as a child with my father and my grandfather (early- to mid-1960s). It was a wild, snaky place. My grandfather, who lived nearby, told me the dam which fed the abandoned mill had been built by slaves using stone quarried nearby. Sadly, the dam was breached and the remains of the mill were swept away by the flooding that accompanied Hurricane Camille in 1968. Since then, what was the pond has filled with trees and only a small creek remains. In 2006 I tried to get over to where the remains of the dam are, but the owner of the land I had to cross just looked at me like I had lost my mind. I guess it is wilder and snakier than ever now.... |
