If you are traveling by, why not stop by House Lake. You'll find a pretty lake called Linden Pond near House Lake; paddling on Robinson River is so much fun. Walkers Branch is next to House Lake and is always a joy to check out; Clark Mountain can be seen from House Lake. If you need a spot to stay RVACU - Red Carpet Inn & Suites Culpeper is a wonderful choice, and Cedar Mountain Campground is a splendid local campground.

| | of precipitation; during May this area sees the most rain; January on the other hand is the driest. Get drenched paddling on Hughes River and Hazel River. Summertime highs at House Lake regularly tend to be in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures drop down into the 60's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's with temperatures at House Lake dipping down into the 20's during winter nights.

Whitlock Millpond

Whitlock Millpond (very old maps show it as Hancock's Mill Pond) used to be a beautiful place. It was hard to get to and, as a result, I only visited once when I went fishing there as a child with my father and my grandfather (early- to mid-1960s). It was a wild, snaky place. My grandfather, who lived nearby, told me the dam which fed the abandoned mill had been built by slaves using stone quarried nearby.
Sadly, the dam was breached and the remains of the mill were swept away by the flooding that accompanied Hurricane Camille in 1968. Since then, what was the pond has filled with trees and only a small creek remains. In 2006 I tried to get over to where the remains of the dam are, but the owner of the land I had to cross just looked at me like I had lost my mind. I guess it is wilder and snakier than ever now.... |

this is a fun stretch of whitewater. i have run numerous times and have enjoyed it every time i would recomend it for anyone. it has a few class 2-3 ledges that are lots of fun and uncountable gravel bars and small rock gardens....near the end there is a nice way to end your trip with a swimming hole complete with a rope swing and all!!!!... |

If you are paddling the hazel this is a heads up when taking out at the low water bridge on monument mills road. The property owners there are real not so friendly. They think they own the river itself. Just a heads up....Some B and B's are near the put-in and take-out for the Hughes. La Bella Terra at 605 and 606 in Madison County is a weekend B and B in season (May-September)and near the take out. It also offers farmhouse dining on Sat. 540 547 2317.... |
