A picturesque lake like Lee Lake next to Grant Lake is a brilliant place to stop by, and Rapidan River is a wonderful whitewater spot nearby. You think that's enough? Just getting warmed up. Hamiltons Thicket is gorgeous and can be spotted from Grant Lake, and hey, Keatons Run is a good local stream. This lake is so wonderful. There's so much to do here at Grant Lake that you need to camp here for a while, Rappahannock River Campground is a brilliant spot for that, and Residence Inn Fredericksburg is a glorious place to get some rest. in the 80's, and the nighttime is fairly cooler of course, frequently in the 60's. All through the wintertime the highs are usually in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Grant Lake. Lots of precipitation falls
at Grant Lake; most of the rain falls through May, and the driest month is January.
Why not spend some time golfing at a close by golf course like Somerset Golf Club; you can run the rapids of Rappahannock River. This lake is
so wonderful. Grant Lake Dam is worth taking a look at if you're here. You'll need more than a day to explore everything Grant Lake has to offer, you can camp at Wilderness Presidential Resort.

I came to this web site for information on Motts Run Reservoir. Not to find out what is in the area. Are there boat rentals at Motts Run? If so how much are they. Is Motts Run a park with places to cook and eat? Can you camp there? Do they allow fishing there? Can you go swiming there? Whitlock Millpond

Whitlock Millpond (very old maps show it as Hancock's Mill Pond) used to be a beautiful place. It was hard to get to and, as a result, I only visited once when I went fishing there as a child with my father and my grandfather (early- to mid-1960s). It was a wild, snaky place. My grandfather, who lived nearby, told me the dam which fed the abandoned mill had been built by slaves using stone quarried nearby.
Sadly, the dam was breached and the remains of the mill were swept away by the flooding that accompanied Hurricane Camille in 1968. Since then, what was the pond has filled with trees and only a small creek remains. In 2006 I tried to get over to where the remains of the dam are, but the owner of the land I had to cross just looked at me like I had lost my mind. I guess it is wilder and snakier than ever now.... |
