If you came to camp Wilderness Presidential Resort is a perfect spot to do that, and whitewater paddling is pleasant on Rapidan River. All through the days of summer, highs typically are in the 80's at Flythe Pond while overnight lows are commonly in the 60's. Highs all through the wintertime are ordinarily in the 40's, and after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Flythe Pond sink into the 20's. This lake is so wonderful. There is a pleasant hiking trail next to Flythe Pond called the Jackson Trail, and Flythe Dam is a beautiful site. Be careful coming to Flythe Pond, you might not ever wanna return | |

home again. Quality Inn Thornburg is a great place to get some rest, and not far from Flythe Pond you'll hit upon Towleys Pond which is a scenic lake. There are other places here than Flythe Pond, for example Towles Pond. There's
so much to do here at Flythe Pond that you need to camp here for a while, Rocky Branch Marina and Campground is a good spot for that.
You're sure to run into some nice people from Richmond here.

Whitlock Millpond

Whitlock Millpond (very old maps show it as Hancock's Mill Pond) used to be a beautiful place. It was hard to get to and, as a result, I only visited once when I went fishing there as a child with my father and my grandfather (early- to mid-1960s). It was a wild, snaky place. My grandfather, who lived nearby, told me the dam which fed the abandoned mill had been built by slaves using stone quarried nearby.
Sadly, the dam was breached and the remains of the mill were swept away by the flooding that accompanied Hurricane Camille in 1968. Since then, what was the pond has filled with trees and only a small creek remains. In 2006 I tried to get over to where the remains of the dam are, but the owner of the land I had to cross just looked at me like I had lost my mind. I guess it is wilder and snakier than ever now.... |

There is also another pit in point at a spot called Elies Ford road, and that is a 14 mile trip great scenery. Also even though it is a class I and II river. It is easier to use a kayak also during the summer you will want a kayak because of the extream low water in some spots.... |
