There are some pleasant whitewater spots on Rappahannock River, and at Fawn Lake you can spot Hamiltons Thicket. Looking for something near Fawn Lake? Grant Lake is in the vicinity, and do take a hike on the Jackson Trail. From a precipitation point of view Fawn Lake is a reasonably normal site; most of the rain falls all through May, and February meanwhile is the driest month. Lake that you need to camp here for a while, Rappahannock River Campground is a glorious spot for that. All the outdoors fun stuff close to Fawn Lake will keep you coming back again and again. Dry warm beds await you at Best Western Central Plaza, and Catharpin Run is one of the streams nearby that might be worth taking a look at.

Is Motts Run a park with places to cook and eat? Can you camp there? Do they allow fishing there? Can you go swiming there? Whitlock Millpond

Whitlock Millpond (very old maps show it as Hancock's Mill Pond) used to be a beautiful place. It was hard to get to and, as a result, I only visited once when I went fishing there as a child with my father and my grandfather (early- to mid-1960s). It was a wild, snaky place. My grandfather, who lived nearby, told me the dam which fed the abandoned mill had been built by slaves using stone quarried nearby.
Sadly, the dam was breached and the remains of the mill were swept away by the flooding that accompanied Hurricane Camille in 1968. Since then, what was the pond has filled with trees and only a small creek remains. In 2006 I tried to get over to where the remains of the dam are, but the owner of the land I had to cross just looked at me like I had lost my mind. I guess it is wilder and snakier than ever now.... |
