Scott Patterson:
I disagree with below.

1. Thompson Lake isn't even close to the most remote lake in the Uinta Mountains. For example, lakes like East Slide Lake and Wild Goose Lake are far more remote.

2. The boulderhopping really isn't that bad. It's well worth the trip.

3. There are some nice campsites just east of the lake.

Thompson Lake is off trail, but it's one of the more popular off-trail lakes (but far less popular than trailed lakes!) and well worth the trip.

Jdog:
This is the most remote lake in all of the Uinta mountains. It's a hellish 1-2hr boulder-hopping steep hike to get to the lake with NO trails or places to camp. Reserved for only extreme mountaineers.

Utah has many beautiful lakes and Thompson Lake is one of them. Thompson Lake gets very little precipitation; September is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest month is January. This lake is so wonderful. For the period of the long summer days, highs frequently are in the 80's at Thompson Lake, and the nighttime is fairly colder of course, mostly in the 40's. Daytime highs during the winter are in the 30's while the cold winter nights at Thompson
   Lake are in the 0's.
Life's too short to enjoy all the amusing things in the Uinta Mountains. Go for a hike on the East Fork Pinto Lake Trail, and don't leave Thompson Lake without first going for a hike along the Highline Trail. Highline Trail Head Campground is a good local campground; a pleasant tour to Four Lakes Basin is a great way to spend an afternoon. This lake is so wonderful. A visit to Cyclone Pass is always fun, and paddling on Duchesne River

               is so much fun.
Rock Creek has a great whitewater paddling spot nearby, and if you get bored of Thompson Lake you could also have a look at close by Amethyst Lake. Be careful coming to Thompson Lake, you might not ever want to go home again. Why not camp at South Fork Campground since you're here at Thompson Lake, and a lake nearby is Boot Lake. Thompson Lake is one of the lakes here in the Uinta Mountains.
All year is a nice time in the Uinta Mountains if you like the outdoors. The cheerful folks of Evanston like to hang out close by, and good hiking is available along the Skinner Cutoff Trail.

LaMarla Lake
Lamarla Lake received it's name from my mother, Margaret Gurr Hamblin, her sister LaVon Gurr Hansen and LaVar Davies,(nephew of my dad Lyman Duane Hamblin Jr.) They were camping and fishing in the Uinta Mountains. While hiking they came upon the beautiful little lake. They decided to give it a name. They took LA from LaVar, MAR from Margaret, and LA from LaVon, forming the name LAMARLA. They posted the name by the lake. I grew up hearing this story. My mother Margaret passed away over twenty years ago. LaVon is still alive and lives with her husband, Omar in Springville, UT. LaVar is also living and resides in St. George UT. Both are in their eighties. As a child my favorite horse was named Lamarla....

Highline Trail
The U.S. Forrest Service last attention to this trail was in 1994/1995 and the trail markings in many places is all but non-existent.  Portions of the trail---particularly in the meadows areas have been overgrown and rock cairn markers, where they do exist, are often overgrown and difficult to find.  Do not attempt this trail without detailed terrain maps and GPS equipment and the ability to use both.   It would also be a good idea to carry a satellite phone (rentals are available) as there is no cell phone signal anywhere along the route from the Mirror Lake trailhead on the West all the way to the Chepeta lake trailhead  on the East...

Rock Creek
(...) The section is comprised of 3 class 3+/IV- drops with swift braided channels in between. It seldom flows since most water is diverted over to the Wasatch front from the Upper Stillwater Dam (it has to spill to be runnable.) Climatologically speaking, March is actually the month of our highest precipitation (which falls as snow, building the pack which then melts in May/June.) Most people find this section of river not nearly as rewarding as other runs in the state....
