These mountains rock, just check out all the fun stuff to do in the Uinta Mountains. A nice nearby hotel is Best Western Dunmar Inn. Wall Lake Dam is worth visiting if you're here, and hiking is a popular thing to do around James Lake; Notch Mountain Trail is a tremendous local trail. And if that's not sufficient, there's loads more to do in the neighborhood of James Lake. Why not camp at Bald Mountain Campground since you're here at James Lake, and there

All through the long summer days at James Lake temperatures are usually in the 80's. Once the sun is down it descends down to the 40's. For the period of the wintertime the highs are generally in the 30's; night lows in the 10's for James Lake. This lake is so wonderful. This lake is located in the wonderful
Uinta Mountains. James Lake is regularly a relatively dehydrated place; most of the rain falls during April, and the driest month is July. The Notch is a nice place to explore; lakes are such peaceful spots, why not stop by Clyde Lake.

Highline Trail

The U.S. Forrest Service last attention to this trail was in 1994/1995 and the trail markings in many places is all but non-existent. Portions of the trail---particularly in the meadows areas have been overgrown and rock cairn markers, where they do exist, are often overgrown and difficult to find. Do not attempt this trail without detailed terrain maps and GPS equipment and the ability to use both. It would also be a good idea to carry a satellite phone (rentals are available) as there is no cell phone signal anywhere along the route from the Mirror Lake trailhead on the West all the way to the Chepeta lake trailhead on the East... |

LaMarla Lake

Lamarla Lake received it's name from my mother, Margaret Gurr Hamblin, her sister LaVon Gurr Hansen and LaVar Davies,(nephew of my dad Lyman Duane Hamblin Jr.) They were camping and fishing in the Uinta Mountains. While hiking they came upon the beautiful little lake. They decided to give it a name. They took LA from LaVar, MAR from Margaret, and LA from LaVon, forming the name LAMARLA. They posted the name by the lake. I grew up hearing this story. My mother Margaret passed away over twenty years ago. LaVon is still alive and lives with her husband, Omar in Springville, UT. LaVar is also living and resides in St. George UT. Both are in their eighties. As a child my favorite horse was named Lamarla.... |

Thompson Lake

I disagree with below.
1. Thompson Lake isn't even close to the most remote lake in the Uinta Mountains. For example, lakes like East Slide Lake and Wild Goose Lake are far more remote.
2. The boulderhopping really isn't that bad. It's well worth the trip.
3. There are some nice campsites just east of the lake.
Thompson Lake is off trail, but it's one of the more popular off-trail lakes (but far less popular than trailed lakes!) and well worth the trip....This is the most remote lake in all of the Uinta mountains. It's a hellish 1-2hr boulder-hopping steep hike to get to the lake with NO trails or places to camp. Reserved for only extreme mountaineers.... |
