So many exciting things to do here at Heart Lake, too great to be true. Brinton Meadow is a nice place to check out, and don't leave Heart Lake without first going for a hike along the Skinner Cutoff Trail. Through the warm months, highs usually are in the 80's at Heart Lake. When the night sets in temperatures sink down into the 40's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 30's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Heart Lake. Since

| | you're here at Heart Lake why not go to Hades Pass, and you can stay the night at Splash Dam Campground. The Uinta Mountains scenery is always beautiful. There's great hiking along the East Fork Pinto Lake Trail; Best Western Dunmar Inn is a great spot to get some rest. Not much precipitation falls here at Heart Lake; February is when you get the most snow here, and June is when it's the driest. This lake is so wonderful. Since you might be in a lake | |

visiting mood you can always go to nearby Betsy Lake. And if that's not sufficient there's loads more amusing things to do in the Uinta Mountains. Get your heart beating on the great whitewater of Rock Creek, and you get a glorious

LaMarla Lake
 | Lamarla Lake received it's name from my mother, Margaret Gurr Hamblin, her sister LaVon Gurr Hansen and LaVar Davies,(nephew of my dad Lyman Duane Hamblin Jr.) They were camping and fishing in the Uinta Mountains. While hiking they came upon the beautiful little lake. They decided to give it a name. They took LA from LaVar, MAR from Margaret, and LA from LaVon, forming the name LAMARLA. They posted the name by the lake. I grew up hearing this story. My mother Margaret passed away over twenty years ago. LaVon is still alive and lives with her husband, Omar in Springville, UT. LaVar is also living and resides in St. George UT. Both are in their eighties. As a child my favorite horse was named Lamarla.... |
Highline Trail
 | The U.S. Forrest Service last attention to this trail was in 1994/1995 and the trail markings in many places is all but non-existent. Portions of the trail---particularly in the meadows areas have been overgrown and rock cairn markers, where they do exist, are often overgrown and difficult to find. Do not attempt this trail without detailed terrain maps and GPS equipment and the ability to use both. It would also be a good idea to carry a satellite phone (rentals are available) as there is no cell phone signal anywhere along the route from the Mirror Lake trailhead on the West all the way to the Chepeta lake trailhead on the East... |
Thompson Lake
 | I disagree with below.
1. Thompson Lake isn't even close to the most remote lake in the Uinta Mountains. For example, lakes like East Slide Lake and Wild Goose Lake are far more remote.
2. The boulderhopping really isn't that bad. It's well worth the trip.
3. There are some nice campsites just east of the lake.
Thompson Lake is off trail, but it's one of the more popular off-trail lakes (but far less popular than trailed lakes!) and well worth the trip....This is the most remote lake in all of the Uinta mountains. It's a hellish 1-2hr boulder-hopping steep hike to get to the lake with NO trails or places to camp. Reserved for only extreme mountaineers.... |
Rock Creek
 | 10 miles away (...) The section is comprised of 3 class 3+/IV- drops with swift braided channels in between. It seldom flows since most water is diverted over to the Wasatch front from the Upper Stillwater Dam (it has to spill to be runnable.) Climatologically speaking, March is actually the month of our highest precipitation (which falls as snow, building the pack which then melts in May/June.) Most people find this section of river not nearly as rewarding as other runs in the state.... |
Lake Marion
 | 11 miles away Lake Marion is a very small lake or pond located North of Trial Lake and South West of Star Lake.
