This lake is one of the great places here in the Uinta Mountains. Summertime highs at Crater Lake usually tend to be in the 80's. Once the sun is down it drops down to the 40's. The winter brings highs down to the 30's with winter lows in the 0's overnight here at Crater Lake. Crater Lake is pretty dried up regularly; most of the rain falls all through September, and January on the other hand is the driest. Lakes are great; Upper Ottoson Lake is a lake

| | that's near Crater Lake, and whitewater paddling is not for everyone but if it's for you then, we recommend Blacks Fork - East Fork. This lake is so wonderful. People from Evanston love to come to Crater Lake, and Crater Lake is great enough to spend more than a day at, Yellow Pine Campground is a great local campground. Now, you may assume that's lots but there's even more exciting stuff to do here at Crater Lake. The East Fork Pinto Lake Trail is a good hiking | |

trail next to Crater Lake, and there is a good hiking trail nearby called the Highline Trail. And that's not all the things you can do here in the Uinta Mountains. On a great day at Crater Lake you can take a hike along the Bear
River Smiths Fork Trail. So many cool things in the Uinta Mountains, just impressive. Not far from Crater Lake, you'll locate Lower Ottoson Lake which is a delightful lake, and camping at South Fork Campground is always a glorious
experience. If you come at the right time of year, Rock Creek offers some great whitewater; the top of Explorer Peak is easily seen from Crater Lake.

Continent Lake
 | I went there about 15 yrs ago fishing was pretty good.... |
Thompson Lake
 | I disagree with below.
1. Thompson Lake isn't even close to the most remote lake in the Uinta Mountains. For example, lakes like East Slide Lake and Wild Goose Lake are far more remote.
2. The boulderhopping really isn't that bad. It's well worth the trip.
3. There are some nice campsites just east of the lake.
Thompson Lake is off trail, but it's one of the more popular off-trail lakes (but far less popular than trailed lakes!) and well worth the trip....This is the most remote lake in all of the Uinta mountains. It's a hellish 1-2hr boulder-hopping steep hike to get to the lake with NO trails or places to camp. Reserved for only extreme mountaineers.... |
Rock Creek
 | (...) The section is comprised of 3 class 3+/IV- drops with swift braided channels in between. It seldom flows since most water is diverted over to the Wasatch front from the Upper Stillwater Dam (it has to spill to be runnable.) Climatologically speaking, March is actually the month of our highest precipitation (which falls as snow, building the pack which then melts in May/June.) Most people find this section of river not nearly as rewarding as other runs in the state.... |
Scow Lake
 | 11 miles away Is the lake named after my great great uncle Pete Scow who logged in the unitah mtns in the late 1800 and early 1900's. He was a tie hack. Do you know the history of the name Scow lake?... |
LaMarla Lake
 | 11 miles away Lamarla Lake received it's name from my mother, Margaret Gurr Hamblin, her sister LaVon Gurr Hansen and LaVar Davies,(nephew of my dad Lyman Duane Hamblin Jr.) They were camping and fishing in the Uinta Mountains. While hiking they came upon the beautiful little lake. They decided to give it a name. They took LA from LaVar, MAR from Margaret, and LA from LaVon, forming the name LAMARLA. They posted the name by the lake. I grew up hearing this story. My mother Margaret passed away over twenty years ago. LaVon is still alive and lives with her husband, Omar in Springville, UT. LaVar is also living and resides in St. George UT. Both are in their eighties. As a child my favorite horse was named Lamarla.... |
Red Castle Lake
 | 11 miles away Nice lake, tough hike, and windy. Fished in late July, fishing was fair, but the size of the fish were between 14-19 inches. Wind was really blowing the day I fished here.... |
Toquer Lake

Highline Trail
 | 12 miles away The U.S. Forrest Service last attention to this trail was in 1994/1995 and the trail markings in many places is all but non-existent. Portions of the trail---particularly in the meadows areas have been overgrown and rock cairn markers, where they do exist, are often overgrown and difficult to find. Do not attempt this trail without detailed terrain maps and GPS equipment and the ability to use both. It would also be a good idea to carry a satellite phone (rentals are available) as there is no cell phone signal anywhere along the route from the Mirror Lake trailhead on the West all the way to the Chepeta lake trailhead on the East... |
Lower Red Castle Lake
