Chepeta Lake, Uinta Mountains, Duchesne County, Utah

Matt Allred:
Chepeta is a very hit or miss lake.  Fishing can be absolutely dead one day and sweet the next.  The water was crazy low two summers ago and there may not even be a lot of fish left unless they've planted it since.  Worth the trip though -- if one lake is cold another will be hot.

The Uinta Mountains scenery is always beautiful. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Uinta Mountains. Going for a hike along the Dry Fork Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this area, and Papoose Lake is a nearby lake that you could take a look at.
What a place this is for outdoors folks. You can take a little tour to Chepeta Dam if you're here at Chepeta Lake, and if you need a place to stay Best Western Inn is a great choice. This lake

is so wonderful. While you're here at Chepeta Lake you can take a hike along the Shale Dugway, and if you came to camp Paradise Campground is a delightful location to do that. Chepeta Lake is pretty arid generally; most of the rain falls through May, and February on the other hand is the driest.
A magnificent place for whitewater paddling in the vicinity of Chepeta Lake is Uinta River, and do pop by Moccasin Lake, it's a picturesque lake. For the period

of the long summer days here at Chepeta Lake, high temperatures commonly reach the 80's. Summer overnight lows descend down to the 50's. All through the wintertime highs are regularly in the 30's; after the sun is down throughout the wintertime temperatures at Chepeta Lake dip into the 0's. But wait, there's more exciting things to do in the Uinta Mountains. If the weather is great here at Chepeta Lake, you can go for a hike along the Icy Hill Dugway. There's so much to do here at Chepeta Lake that you need to camp here for a while, Spirit Lake Campground is a pleasant location for that.

Little Elk Lake
That's a pretty tough road to get there. I'd say about 4 miles in, but lots of big rocks. Great views though. We took ATV's up and it was a fairly unremarkable ride. We did see a couple of 4WD Trucks headed up too. Good scenery up top. I'd like to camp there and hang out. We didn't fish. It doesn't look really good for that....

Beaver Lake

Nice bows. Much less traveled than Whitney, next door. The real fishin' is 2 miles away though....

Craig Lake
16 miles away
Craig lake was named by my dad in honor of his deceased son when he was employed by the Utah fish and game in about 1960....The man who named Craig lake is Max North....
