Simmer Lake is a wet place that gets a lot of rain; May is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest of the months is August. This lake is so wonderful. Simmer Lake is not the only site close by, Pine Crest Lake is a close by lake, and if you need a location to stay Holiday Inn Express Jacksonville, Tx is a pleasant choice.

| | Pond is close by; don't miss out on a fine swamp; Turnbow Lake is right here at Simmer Lake. This lake is so wonderful. Going for a hike along the Mount Hope Tract Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this area, and Simmer Lake Dam is pretty. Simmer Lake is not far at all from Jacksonville, and camping is available at Shady Pines RV Park and Campground. Dry warm beds await you at Best Western Executive Inn,
and since you're here you can take a hike along the Nature Trail. Be careful coming to Simmer Lake, you might not ever want to return home again. Take a side trip to Bridge Creek, and hiking along the Jim Hogg State Historical Park
Trail is delightful fun.
A great spot for whitewater paddling in close proximity to Simmer Lake is Neches River; why not camp at Rusk Palestine State Park since you're here at Simmer Lake.

...t float under a downed tree, you crawl over the tree and then get back in. I'm sure the when and where the trees are down changes quite often.... And it looks like someone (probably the river authority) takes a saw down and cuts some of this out from time to time.
The put in location is correct. However, the take out is not. You need to float further down to the 175 bridge (less than 1/4th mile) and get out there.
I would suggest that experienced paddlers attempt this only when the water is high from heavy rains or when the dam is letting a lot of water out. There's vegetative litter stuck in the trees 10 foot above the water line.... So at some points of the year... This thing moves... And could represent dangers with the amount of timber.
You might consider taking a machete on this trip just in case. Don't forget the fishing pole, or if you are an archer, a bow for the huge gar and buffalo. There's plenty of fishin to do .
