    Go to McDonald Lake if you want to go to a nice lake. This lake is so wonderful. Here at McDonald Lake you'll almost certainly meet some folks from Palestine, and McDonald Lake is great enough to spend more than a day at, Palestine RV Park is a great local campground. Jackson Lake is a fine lake right next door to McDonald Lake, and Best Western Palestine Inn is a fine place to get some rest. An average amount of rain falls at McDonald Lake; May is the wettest  
   month with most rain while July is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
If you need a spot to stay Holiday Inn Express Palestine, Tx is a nice choice, and why not explore McDonald Lake Dam if you're here. You believe that's enough? Just getting warmed up. Lakes are such serene places, why not stop by Charles E Ham Lake right next door to McDonald Lake, and you can go for a hike on the Nature Trail. Throughout the warmest time of the year at McDonald
 
               Lake highs are usually in the 90's, and all through summer nights temperatures are in the 70's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 50's, and winter nights come with lows in the 30's to McDonald Lake.
If you don't mind getting wet, you can always go whitewater paddling on Neches River, and if you came to camp HWY 155 RV Park is a great place to do that.

...under a downed tree, you crawl over the tree and then get back in. I'm sure the when and where the trees are down changes quite often.... And it looks like someone (probably the river authority) takes a saw down and cuts some of this out from time to time.

The put in location is correct. However, the take out is not. You need to float further down to the 175 bridge (less than 1/4th mile) and get out there.

I would suggest that experienced paddlers attempt this only when the water is high from heavy rains or when the dam is letting a lot of water out. There's vegetative litter stuck in the trees 10 foot above the water line.... So at some points of the year... This thing moves... And could represent dangers with the amount of timber.

You might consider taking a machete on this trip just in case. Don't forget the fishing pole, or if you are an archer, a bow for the huge gar and buffalo. There's plenty of fishin to do .
