    Go to Haverlah Lake if you want to go to a nice lake. A normal amount of precipitation falls here at Haverlah Lake; May is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest month is July. This lake is so wonderful. Since you might be in a lake visiting mood you can always pop by nearby Broughton Lake; a magnificent close by hotel is Holiday Inn Express Palestine, Tx. For the duration of the summertime, highs mostly are in the 90's at Haverlah Lake, and through  
   summer nights temperatures are in the 70's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 50's, and nighttime lows at Haverlah Lake all through the wintertime mostly drop into the 30's.
You assume that's enough? Just getting warmed up. A perfect place for whitewater paddling next to Haverlah Lake is Neches River; you can go for a hike on the Nature Trail. Very splendid water scenery is available at Haverlah Lake Dam in close proximity to Haverlah
 
               Lake; if you came for an overnight stay Palestine RV Park is a brilliant place to camp.
You'll meet a lot of people from Palestine here; Best Western Palestine Inn is a glorious site to get some rest. Lakes are wonderful; Haverlah Lake is a lake that's next to Haverlah Lake, and HWY 155 RV Park is a good local campground.

...hort portages and negotiate downed timber in the water. One area in particular you will need to tie some line off to your kayak and let it float under a downed tree, you crawl over the tree and then get back in. I'm sure the when and where the trees are down changes quite often.... And it looks like someone (probably the river authority) takes a saw down and cuts some of this out from time to time.

The put in location is correct. However, the take out is not. You need to float further down to the 175 bridge (less than 1/4th mile) and get out there.

I would suggest that experienced paddlers attempt this only when the water is high from heavy rains or when the dam is letting a lot of water out. There's vegetative litter stuck in the trees 10 foot above the water line.... So at some points of the year... This thing moves... And could represent dangers with the amount of timber.

You might consider taking a machete on this trip just in case. Don't forget the fishing pole, or if you are an archer, a bow for the huge gar and buffalo. There's plenty of fishin to do .
