After a long day outdoors Comfort Inn Johnson City is a nice place to spend a night or two; a short visit to Big Spring is always worthwhile. great place to get some rest. This lake is so wonderful. Near Moffett Pond you stumble on the Stamping Ground Trail which is a fine hiking trail, and in case you don’t mind getting drenched, you can always go whitewater paddling on
Watauga. Doe River is a tremendous whitewater spot close to Moffett Pond, and there is a delightful hiking trail nearby called the Old Dug Trail. The annual rain here at Moffett Pond is about average; July is the month that gets
the most rain, and October on the other hand is the driest. Summer at Moffett Pond comes with high temperatures in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures plunge down into the 60's. Highs during the winter are regularly in the
40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Moffett Pond. If you came for an overnight stay River Ridge Campground is a great place to camp; don't forget to take a nice little tour to Marion Branch.

 | ...y when light rains during cloudy days can add to visibilty being greatly reduced at the Bee Cliff Rapids (I once witnessed a canoe flip end-over-end in a fog bank). The Bee Cliff Rapids are also for some reason (mistaken or purposely) referred by some North Carolina-based rafting companies to their customers as the 'Anaconda Rapids' - if you are not aware of this fact, you may end up paying significantly more for a rafting trip on this section of the Watauga River. The Tennessee Valley Authority releases the seasonally scheduled impounded resevoir water from the TVA Wilbur Dam at approximately 1:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday (the main input is just below Wilbur Dam and southeast of Elizabethton, Tennessee). Red Fork Falls Trail
 | Yes, it is dangerous, I have fallen and slid all the way to one of the small pools after the falls....Hike is very short and falls are very beautiful… You can also camp close the parking area if you want to....my parents took me to red fork falls last weekend. it is beautiful. it is a short hike and very easy to get to. the only problem is the trail brings you out at the top of the falls instead of the bottom. you have to be very careful because the rocks are so slippery. my dad said he knew several people who had fallen from the top and 2 of them had actually died. so be very careful.... |

South Holston Lake
