If you like lakes and you're in this part of Tennessee you can check out Burkey Pond. Burkey Pond sees pretty high levels of rain; May is when you get the most rain here while October is regularly the driest month. Don't forget to take a wonderful little tour to Crazy Creek, and General Morgan Inn & Conference Center is a brilliant spot to get some rest. This lake is so wonderful. Burkey Pond is a location with many visitors from Greeneville, and the Tweed

| | Trail is a brilliant hiking trail nearby. A lake close by is Tom Austin Lake, and if the weather is good, you can go for a hike along the Trail of the Lonesome Pine. Dry warm beds await you at Greeneville-Days Inn, and camping at The Oaks Retreat Center is always a nice experience. Whitewater paddling is good on French Broad, and playing golf is lots of fun at Andrew Johnson Golf Club. This lake is so wonderful. Get dripping wet paddling on Big Laurel | |

Paint Creek Campground
 | 10 miles away As a life-long ''patron'' of Paint Creek, I can say I have seen it go through MANY changes. Aside from just the campground the main ''Coridor'' of the Park has several Picnic sites with rest-rooms, as well as 5 or 6 secluded, single group campsites, that arent in the campground itself. These are, in MY opinion the better places to camp, as they are all close enough to a picnic area to walk to use the restroom. There is also a relitively deep ''swimming hole'' and picknic area called Dudley Falls. It is located about halfway into the corridor. There are cliffs to dive from, for the thrill seeker, as well as Paint Rock, located at the emergence of Paint Creek into The French Broad River. Paint Rock is a 160 foot, Sheer vertical, limestone Cliff. PERFECT for rappelling, again for the thrill seeker in all of us!!
As a Greene County Native, I may be Biased, but I honestly think Paint Creek Recreational area is one of the Finest examples of what the Great Smokey Mountains have to offer.... |

Bullen Hollow Trail
 | 13 miles away 1 PHOTO I hiked the bullen Hollow trail 2-2-08 with the Geenevile hiking club. This is an old atv trail and the first part is very steep climbing up through mountain laurel and hardwoods. After you reach the ridge line the trail levels and skirts the edge of a small canyon, with views of huge cliffs on the other side.Margarette falls are below this trail and you can here the creek all along the way. There is a nice lunch spot at the top when you reach an old logging road.I would rate this trail as moderate.Total milage 5 miles. National Geographic map # 782 will show you how to get to the trail head.... |
