Open April 15 to October 15. Most sites are occupied by seasonal campers but overnite pull-thru sites are available for RV's as large as 40 foot fifth-wheels and Class C Motorhomes. There are also sites for pop-up campers and tents. Since we are midway between Johnstown and Altoona, many sightseers find it convenient to visit both places without having to change campgrounds. There is a dangerous section when the elevation drops, and the river turns wicked. This is the ECHO/PARKHILL section of the river. When you see a huge green bridge, you are coming near to the drop. Be careful of the hydraulics, this is a dangerous section, but can be navigated with some foresight. ...Very dangerous river. Not recommended for beginners....Ran this river for the first time today thinking it would be a gentle paddle. WARNING. It is NOT class II. There are many boulders and ledges. Swift current in high water. Hazardous thirty-foot waterfall right after a sharp bend to the left...with no warning. I banged my kayak up really bad taking the fall and nearly died. BE CAUTIOUS.... |
