A charming lake like Valen Lake in close proximity to Salamander Lake is a nice spot to take a look at, and camping is available at Meadow Creek Campground. If you come at       the right time of year, Illinois River offers some good whitewater; the Chetco Peak Trail is a good hiking trail nearby. If the weather is fine here at Salamander Lake, you can go for a hike along the Upper Chetco Trail, and whitewater paddling is not for everyone but if it's for you then, we recommend Smith River - North Fork. During the warmest time of the year highs here at Salamander Lake reach the 70's; during summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. The                  cold days of the winter come with highs in the 50's while the cold winter nights at Salamander Lake are in the 30's. Any time is a good time at Salamander Lake if you like the outdoors. Near Salamander Lake you hit upon the Illinois River Trail which is a pleasant hiking trail, and from Salamander Lake you get a great view of Dry Butte.
