Summertime brings highs in the 70's to Melis Lake. Once the sun is down it falls down to the 50's. Daytime highs through the wintertime are in the 40's with winter lows in the 30's overnight here at Melis Lake. This lake is so wonderful. On a great day at Melis Lake you can take a hike along the Swallow Lake Trail, and don't leave Melis Lake without first paying a visit to Gatch Falls. outdoors you'll go for it here in the Central Cascade Range. While you're here at Melis Lake you can take a hike along the Marion Lake Trail, and if you need a location to stay Best Western Ponderosa Lodge is a nice choice. Melis
Lake ordinarily gets much rain; the wettest month of the year is ordinarily December, that's the one that rains the most, and July is the month with the least moisture. You believe that's sufficient? Just getting warmed up. You'll
find a delightful lake called Jenny Lake near Melis Lake, and in the event that you don’t have a problem getting drenched, you can always go whitewater paddling on Marion Creek. You'll truly wish for more hours in a day to enjoy all
the fun stuff in the Central Cascade Range. A pleasant spree to Eight Lakes Basin is a nice way to spend an afternoon; whitewater paddling is good on Santiam River - North.

Jefferson Lake Trail
 | I just completed this trail with my German Shepherd and had a great time. We made Jefferson Lake in 4 hours, stayed the night and returned at a faster pace, making the trailhead in 3 hours. A big portion of the trail is overgrown with 5ft. tall plant life, making the trail impossible to see. I used a compass to stay on course and bushwhack for about 3 miles, then picked up the trail again. It's obvious this trail hasn't received any attention from the forest service for some time now,so plan on using your nav skills on this one. We encountered a braver-than-average black bear while encamped at Jefferson Lake, and had difficulty finding a suitable place to hang a bear bag since all the trees are limbless due to a forest fire. My dog, Sigg, is a good bear deterrant and took the night shift guarding the food bag. If you are considering this trail, start early enough so you're not walking in the dark and bring some good jungle juice (deet). Bear bells may be useful as well. Hope this helps somebody!... |
