The Central Cascade Range scenery is always beautiful. A great deal of precipitation falls at Island Lake; the month with most of the rain is December, and the driest of the months is July. All the outdoors cool things in the Central Cascade Range will keep you coming back many times. The peak of Olallie Butte can be seen from Island Lake. | | duration of the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's with winter lows in the 30's overnight here at Island Lake. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Central Cascade Range. If you get bored of Island Lake, you could also stop at nearby Lake Alice, and going for a hike on the Camp One Trail is always a good adventure. The skiing at Hoodoo is delightful, and close by you come across the Blue Lake Camas Prairie Trail which is a great hiking trail. | |

And if you're still looking for more outdoors exciting stuff just keep reading. Camping is available at Lemiti Campground; Marion Creek has a pleasant whitewater paddling spot close by. This lake is so wonderful. Dark Lake is a nearby
lake that you could stop by, and whitewater paddling is good on Metolius River. A delightful place to camp here at Island Lake is Trout Lake Campground, and the Pacific Crest Trail - section 22 is a magnificent hiking trail close by.

Pacific Crest Trail - section 22
 | Roundtrip Distance 13.7 miles Elevation Gain 2,348 ft. This peak is trailless, meaning a portion or all of the route up the mountain is via an unmarked trail. For this particular mountain, the typical route is known as a ''herd path'' which is not much more than a worn, but unmarked trail. Some of the herd paths are easy to follow, others are not. In many instances the hiker will travel down a false herd path and eventually have to correct his/her course via backtracking. For these particular mountains, it is imperative that the hiker carry a compass (and know how to use it) and topographic map.... |
Jefferson Lake Trail
 | I just completed this trail with my German Shepherd and had a great time. We made Jefferson Lake in 4 hours, stayed the night and returned at a faster pace, making the trailhead in 3 hours. A big portion of the trail is overgrown with 5ft. tall plant life, making the trail impossible to see. I used a compass to stay on course and bushwhack for about 3 miles, then picked up the trail again. It's obvious this trail hasn't received any attention from the forest service for some time now,so plan on using your nav skills on this one. We encountered a braver-than-average black bear while encamped at Jefferson Lake, and had difficulty finding a suitable place to hang a bear bag since all the trees are limbless due to a forest fire. My dog, Sigg, is a good bear deterrant and took the night shift guarding the food bag. If you are considering this trail, start early enough so you're not walking in the dark and bring some good jungle juice (deet). Bear bells may be useful as well. Hope this helps somebody!... |
