Howell Pond is a nice lake to visit. Howell Pond is located in the Central Cascade Range. During the warm months at Howell Pond highs are frequently in the 70's. All through the moonlight hours it's commonly in the 40's. Highs during the winter are commonly in the 40's, and through the dark hours in the winter at Howell Pond temperatures descend to the 30's. All the outdoors exciting stuff in the Central Cascade Range will keep you coming back time and again.

| | Nearby lakes? Sure, Butte Lake is right next door to Howell Pond, and if you came to camp Taylor Park is a glorious site to do that. This lake is so wonderful. Don't leave Howell Pond without first going for a hike along the Crabtree Lake Trail; the trees of Santiam State Forest are a delightful source of shade on hot summer days. This lake is so wonderful. Pond gets a lot of water; the wettest month of the year is mostly December, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest of the months is July. An afternoon playing golf at Elkhorn Valley Golf Course is always a diversion. There's
so much to do here at Howell Pond that you need to camp here for a while, Cascade Sports Camp is a nice spot for that. A glorious close by hotel is Rodeway Inn Sublimity, and there are some great whitewater spots on Santiam River
- Little North. You just can't envision the amount of outdoors exciting stuff the area near Howell Pond has to offer. Anderson Creek is a tremendous local stream, and there's fine hiking along the Snow Peak Mill City Trail.

Pine Crest Trail
 | 12 miles away ...est Rd narrows and now effectively ends. Actually, it continues, but the road is impeded by a gate sporting many 'no trespassing' signs and marking it 'private property'. When we got to this point, we were just about to turn around and go home when another car drove past us onto the road. Having driven for several hours to get there, we dared to venture further, and followed the car despite the many warnings on the gate. Now, if you are reading this please heed my advice... never do what we did. Do not try to find this trail. Listen to signs. They are usually there for a reason. We could not locate the next road to turn on because all the old street signs had been removed and all of the old turn-offs warned away the unauthorized with huge boulders blocking the road, locked gates and more no-trespassing signs. After taking some pictures of beautifully dilapidated country houses, we decided to call it a day and return home empty handed. However, when we got to the gate we came in through, we found that while we were away, someone had closed and locked it. We were trapped, and not the l... |
