You can make out Black Butte from Hoover Creek Reservoir; John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is a fine national park. This lake is so wonderful. If you come at the right time of year, John Day River offers some perfect whitewater, and if you're here, you could also visit delightful Condon Reservoir.
