The beauty of Pops Lake is reason enough to stop by. You'll need more than a day to look at everything Pops Lake has to offer, you can camp at Beech Fork State Park. Pops Lake frequently gets lots of precipitation; most of the rain falls during July; the driest of the months is January. Since you might be in a lake visiting mood you can always stop by nearby Twin Lake, and Comfort Inn Barboursville is a delightful spot to get some rest.

Through the warm days of summer at Pops Lake temperatures are ordinarily in the 80's,
and the nighttime is a tad chillier of course, ordinarily in the 60's. During the winter this place gets highs in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Pops Lake. Get your pulse rate up on the splendid whitewater of Mud River; Pops Lake is a place with many visitors from Huntington-Ashland.

Mud River
| This is an answer to Cindy's question about the Guyandotte River. There is a put-in at Branchland, then a take-out 3 1/2 hours downstream at Salt Rock. A very nice float with a few riffles, lots of fish and wildlife for viewing. You can also put-in or take-out at the mouth of Mud river in Barboursville which is good for a Mud River or Guyandotte River float. Salt Rock to B'ville would be a great all day float on the Guyandotte, I'm guessing 10 to 12 miles....There is no way there could be any rapids on the Mud River. I agree with the writer below. However, I would love to flatwater kayak down the Guyan which is closer to Beech Fork State Park than the Mud. It connects to the Mud in Barboursville and runs into the Ohio a few miles later. It should be a very plesant peaceful trip. I just can not locate a putin spot. Can any one help? I live 10 miles away from the BF campground. Thanks... |
