85 years ago my mother who lived in Brooklyn spent her vacations at Lake Twitchell, she said once she went to the adirondacks she never went back to the catskills. I got up this morning and thought of her conversations about the lake and decided to look it up, I hope it's still as beautiful as she described it so many years ago,I still have her snap shots.

Terror Lake
...was named in the early 19th century before stillwater. The Carthage road went up the Beaver river drainage. Two brothers got lost up in the ridges above Terror Lake. Almost died. They found the lake and named it after their nights of terror. Guys used to hunt there in the fly in days. The last last guy to go there was a drainage ditch runner. Calls himself PH. Take his advice. It's a long way in and you MUST know the woods and be a woodsman. There are plenty of blow downs to go through overland. The way to go is via the end of Twitchell Lk. The Sisters who own the old Teahouse at the end of Twitchell are nice old girls. I saved their nephew one cold November night. They bought me some good whiskey. Anyway that's the way to get into Terror Lk. Follow the old trail into the South Branch Beaver River drainage. Head northeast for a good mile and keep the high ground to your right shoulder. Keep walking about 4 miles and make sure the big ridge is over your right shoulder. You can't miss the lake. There is an old ghost trail marked with blue soap can lids at the base of the ridge. Probabl...

Bug Lake
11 miles away
...ed into the celluloid of my mine. That was some twenty years ago. The first time that I visited Bug lake was in the late 70's. It was a beautiful warm Sept. Weekend. Camped over under the big pines. Had just bought a brand new Jansport pack which I still use today. Anyway, had spent the late afternoon fishing for brookies from shore. The action was to say the least was furious. The tip from Willard the Ranger stationed atop the Wakely fire tower (copper color phebe) was part of my success. That day the trout where just crazy jumpin' out of the water all over that lake. It just got to the point that that I just gave up fishin', set the pack rod aside, and just stood there watching totally amazed! So many brookies were jumping out of the water and slapping their bellies as they re-entered the water it sounded like applause! Ya' gott'a lot a great memories of bug lake. Some time ask my nephew about getting stuck on a ledge climbing the cliff above Eagle nest! Guess who had to climb up and get him down? Good thing I love the kid, can't wait till his kids are old enough to tell them the s...

Oswegatchie River - East Branch
14 miles away
Would you please let me know what the kyaking conditions are from Inlet Road to the village of Wanakena. I am going to be at Wanakena this coming weekend and am considering kyaking from Inlet Road to Wanakena. Please let me know if the water level is high enough to float with limited carries. Also, the group consists of limited experienced kyakers. I noticed from Google Satelite photos that there seems to be sections of white water - I am not sure what season the photo is from but one phots seems to be from summer and another closer to Wanakena, Spring with considerable runoff. I noticed from your description above that it is class II-IV Water. Please describe the degree of difficulty in general for that distance, and if coming into class IV areas are they visible and easily avoided by carries. If so, how long and difficult are the carries, and how many ? Your information will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you, Rick McCurdy...

Brooktrout Lake
19 miles away
Lynch, The lake is stocked for DEC study ONLY. The lake was a dead lake and came back on it's own. But studies suggest that that may not last. The fish were stocked to see if they can reproduce in the lake that still has some acid. They may be able to live in it but reproduction could be affected by low level acid.In this case the fish will live out their lives and die off with no new fish to replace them. Lets hope it works. Time will tell....I would like to fish this lake. Wondering about the fishing....Used to fish lake in the 60s.caught lots of trout off that old raft....

Chub Pond
