Birdeye Lake
16 miles away
The East Humboldt mountain range, an extension of the Ruby mountain range in northeastern Nevada, has seven named alpine lakes: Angel, Greys, Boulder, Steele, Smith, Winchell and Birdeye. Birdeye Lake is the least known of these lakes and is the most inaccessible. It is also the smallest and is located on a rocky ledge on the side of 3rd Boulder Creek Canyon (Boulder Lake lies at the head of the same canyon). The location of the ledge is difficult to recognize, even after having been there, and the lake can only be reached by a difficult and steep off-trail climb from 3rd Boulder Canyon or by scaling the ridge from 2nd Boulder Canyon and then descending to the lake, again by a very difficult off-trail scramble. A trail up 2nd Boulder Canyon or a semblance of a trail up 3rd Boulder, will at least put the hiker within striking distance of the lake. This lake, however, hardly averages even one visitor per season. While in this part of Nevada, do not think about including this destination as part of your itinerary. ...
