Go for a hike on the Summit Trail; dry warm beds await you at Ruidoso Downs-Days Inn. There are other sites here than Shield Lake, for example Antelope Lake; a fine site to camp here at Shield Lake is Baca Campground. This lake is so wonderful. Going for a hike on the Capitan Peak Trail is always a delightful adventure, and Copeland Canyon is another pleasant spot to check       out close by. For the period of the summertime at Shield Lake highs are commonly in the 90's. Through the dark hours of summer temperatures sink down into the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 50's with temperatures at Shield Lake dipping down into the 20's throughout winter nights. Good hiking is available along the Mitten Bar Trail, and camping is available at Mountain High RV Park. You absolutely should love Shield Lake.
