Going for a hike on the Mitten Bar Trail is always a delightful adventure. Lakes? Sure, Antelope Lake is close by. If you came for an overnight stay Mountain High RV Park is a tremendous place to camp, and a great nearby hotel is Ruidoso Downs-Days Inn. This lake is so wonderful. There is a fine hiking trail close to Shield Lake called the Summit Trail, and not far from Shield Lake you'll come across Beard Lake which       is a wonderful lake. During the warm days of summer highs here at Shield Lake get into the 90's with overnight lows in the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 50's, and all through the dark hours in the wintertime at Shield Lake temperatures descend to the 20's. There's just no way someone can get bored here at Shield Lake. Camping is available at Baca Campground. Around Shield Lake you don’t get a lot of rain; the wettest month of the year is                  mostly August, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest of the months is January.
