While staying at Shield Lake you could always discover Copeland Canyon, and on a great day you can take a hike along the Capitan Peak Trail. At Shield Lake you don’t see much precipitation; the month of August is the wettest with most of the rain while January is the month with the least amount of precipitation. For the period of the summertime highs here at Shield Lake reach the 90's, and the       nighttime is rather colder of course, usually in the 60's. Highs during the winter are generally in the 50's while Shield Lake night low temperatures throughout the wintertime are in the 20's. The Summit Trail is a great hiking trail near Shield Lake, and Shield Lake is wonderful enough to spend more than a day at, Baca Campground is a wonderful local campground. This lake is so wonderful. Camping at Mountain High RV Park is always a nice experience, and                  there is a wonderful hiking trail close by called the Mitten Bar Trail.
