     Blue Lake is a nice lake to visit. This lake is one of the great places here in the Mesa Verde. This lake is so wonderful. If you need a location to stay Farmington Travelodge is a great choice; Blue Lake is right by the Whites Trail. This place, the Mesa Verde, has so much outdoors fun stuff. Blue Lake is not the only location nearby, East Lake is a nearby lake, and Blue Lake is a delightful location to visit for more than one day, Mom and Pop RV Park is a delightful  
   location to camp nearby.
This lake is so wonderful. If you get bored of Blue Lake, you could also have a look at nearby Jones Lake; do take a hike on the Petroglyph Point Trail. Barker Arroyo is near Blue Lake and is always a delight to have a look at, and San Juan River has a great whitewater paddling spot nearby. You feel that's enough? Just getting warmed up. Don't miss out on a tour to Mesa Verde National Park if you're here at Blue Lake, and whitewater
 
               paddling is perfect on Animas River.
The warmest time of the year at Blue Lake arrives with high temperatures in the 80's. Through the dark hours of summer temperatures descend down into the 50's. For the period of the winter highs are in the 30's; winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Blue Lake. Blue Lake is a location that is reasonably dehydrated generally; through August this area sees the most rain while June is typically the driest month. If you like the outdoors you'll like it here in the Mesa Verde. Near Blue Lake you find good places like Little Barker Arroyo, and River Grove RV Park is a great campground nearby.
You're sure to run into some friendly people from Farmington here. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Wheeler Trail, and after a long day outdoors The Region Inn is a delightful place to spend a night or two.

Mormon Reservoir
16 miles away
The Mormon Reservoir is located on Hay gulch stream before it flows into La Plata River. In the late 1920's the Mormon Church in Utah paid to have the damn across Hay Gulch constructed for the Mormon village of Red Mesa. Water is stored in the reservoir until it is needed for farmers at Red Mesa. The water is released into the La Plata River and is measured for agricultural purposes during the drier part of the summer. Young men from Red Mesa built frame buildings on the rocky and wooded west hillside going into Hay Gulch. Until the damn was completed the workers stayed in these dwellings. All of the work on the earthen damn was done by hand and horse drawn equipment. Dynamite was used to blast boulders used on the damn to hold the water in place until needed. The impounded water becomes undrinkable by early summer when it has a strong odor. Water dogs (salamanders) and tadpoles become prolific as the summer advances.
