If you like lakes and you're in this part of New Jersey you can check out Hendricks Pond. After a long day outdoors Hampton Inn & Suites Newark-Harrison-Riverwalk, NJ is a great site to spend a night or two; Hendricks Pond is right by the Cannonball Trail. This lake is so wonderful. If you haven’t been to Gateway National Recreation Area, you should schedule some time for it since you're here, and an afternoon playing golf at Weequahic Park Golf Course is always
   a joy.
For the period of the warmest time of the year, highs frequently are in the 80's at Hendricks Pond while night lows are frequently in the 50's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 30's, and winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Hendricks Pond. Just can't get enough of Hendricks Pond. If you don’t have a problem getting covered with water, you can always go whitewater paddling on Pequannock River, and hey, Gotta ski right? Sterling

Forest is a delightful location to do that. Comfort Suites Newark is a pleasant place to get some rest; why not camp at Rein Teen Tours while you're here at Hendricks Pond.
A lake nearby is Clarks Pond; this is a popular spot for folks from New York-Newark-Edison. Hendricks Pond is a rather wet place usually with much rainfall; the month with most of the rain is May; the driest of the months is February. Camp Horizons is a nice local campground, and a great place for whitewater paddling is Rockaway River.
This lake is so wonderful. Hendricks Pond is not the only spot nearby, Kingsland Lake is a nearby lake, and naturally Second River is a striking stream that is worth checking out.

Bee Meadow Pond
16 miles away
Beautiful scenery. A trail surrounding the second and 3rd ponds makes for a nice walk although a little overgrown in places. Fishing has been slow to recover from the fishkill in 2001 when fertilizer chemicals built up on the deep bottom mixed with the pondwater creating toxic conditions for the fish. It is slowly improving with the bass and pickerel that have survived are replenishing the fish population. I've caught some 4 to 6 pound bass in recent years so they must have been around before and survived the fishkill which is good news. The Pond is stocked with trout annually, but I can't see them lasting longer than a couple of weeks due to the warm and stagnant waters. Spring and early summer are the best times to go before the fertilizer rich waters of pond foster abundant algae and lillypad growth. The second and third ponds are the best for bass, while catfish can be caught anywhere and thrive in the stagnant waters. I would recommend shiners for bass if you can find them anywhere, but lures work fine....

Taylortown Reservoir

Cold Spring Lake
16 miles away
Cold Spring Lake is owned by the Salvation Army. Because of the liabilities involved, they no longer allow people to fish the lake. If you want to fish Cold Spring Lake, you will have to register for their Senior Citizen Program (minimum age is 55). Boats are available for use only when a lifeguard is on duty and be prepared to say ''Grace'' before every meal. The lake is worth fishing and if you bring your wife there are a lot of other activities going on. Currently prices are $340 per person for an eight day, 7 night stay at the lodge. Meals are included in that price. You can contact them by mail at The Salvation Army, P.O.Box 132, Bloomingdale, NJ 07403. It's a pretty good deal....
